A coach for Bob

Way back when, dinosaurs walked the earth. No, not THAT far back, but let’s step back to 2012 - only 6 years ago. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:
Anyway, I built a passenger coach and also created a log. Last year at TrainOps, Bob asked me if I could duplicate the process. Gulp. You CANNOT turn down the BD!

So, fast forward to today. I’ve been working on it in fits and starts; lots of stops! :grinning:

But, it now looks like the stumbling blocks are mostly out of the way, I think I can document the process. I’m so glad I did the log, as it does provide some half decent directions.

First up is the underbody and frame.

I’m just using Tamiya thin cement and lots of clamps.

Bob is the originator of the term “Operations Quality” so I think I’ll stick with that theory. This model will NOT be as detailed as the first one I built.

I did have some tanks left over from my years of projects, but no need to put any of the piping and valves in, as we should normally be looking at this model from the other side.

The frame is built to easily accomodate the trucks.

Although the design has changed a bit since I built the prototype, I still needed to accomodate the coupler. I used my 3D printer to make a piece.

This isn’t the final piece - I decided it was easier to print a piece WITH a hole drilled into it, rather than attempting to drill a hole. I’m not real good at 3D, but I sure do enjoy it!

You can’t see this piece once it is in place, but you can see the screw…I did have to drill a hole in the frame piece to accomodate it.

I also had some chairs left over…and told Bob we could use them for the interior.

The only downside was that I didn’t have enough for the entire coach…

Bob suggested we use some of the chairs from my Parlor Car to make a combined Parlor Car/Coach.

Meh. Too funky looking? Bob said he would create a “bar” to divide the two sections and created a model using Autodesk 360 Fusion. Pretty cool program, and it allows us to easily share a project between the two of us.

The initial piece was a bit too small (in black), but Bob redid the design and I printed out the orange copy (different filament, is all)

He had also done a wall design, and it also went through re-design and print. But I convinced him that the first one was a better fit.

Meanwhile, I ran across a carpet pattern and printed it out. It just needs to be cut out and glued to the floor.

So, now I’m about caught up in the progress photos and ready to move on from here; hopefully no more stumbling blocks! I’ve got some more supplies arriving late tomorrow, so I will hopefully have some time to work on it this week and get new pictures!

This is going to be fun to follow! Bob should set this up so it stays at the top of this list on the front page so we can follow it if we miss one!

Agree Doug… Will be another nice project to follow as it’s built… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Many thanks to Bruce for saying he would build this kit. I’ve had it for years, it wasn’t cheap, and it’s been sitting in my shop mocking me.

Edited to add: This is one of the GAL Line coaches: http://www.thegalline.com/Page19ETWNC.html

Oh great - THAT’S what that little voice is - NOW it’s mocking me!!! (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Yesterday I glued the chairs in place - the bar is not yet glued down, but you get an idea of what it might look like - obviously we’re without paint here.

Then there’s the windows.

Six windows to a side, and there’s an inside and an outside for each window.

And, each window inside is made up of two pieces and the outside is made up of three different pieces.

When assembled, the outside window will look sort of like this:

And, once in the car, hopefully like this - notice that the inside piece has some scribing to sort of represent the three pieces on the outside - even though there are only two…

Man, that’s just a LOT of window pieces!(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Edit: correct number of window pieces

Ohh, this is going to be a nice car.

Better you than me…

Fun to watch, tedious to do, more so with so many kibitzers.

Oh boy.

Will you be serving snacks?

I see Bob is there overseeing the work !

He’s tough he has the stop watch going … (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

Doing my normal “catch up”. This looks great! Ready to follow along.

Will this be a a business car that “could” travel at high speed when needed ?

“If so” then I’m politely asking for the car when Bruce is finished so that it meet’s Amtrak standards.

“If not” then forget it.

I’m sure there’s an answer to that - but I’d have to understand the question. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

In the meantime, making some progress. Floor is painted, “carpet” glued in place and then I ended up hand painting the seats. I’m sure I missed some areas, but once the walls are up it will be VERY tough to see…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif)

Nice progress, Bruce… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

It’s a great project, thanks for the updates…I keep reading the title wrong (!):

John

I am with you. I keep thinking Bob is to young for the senior games and to old for little league…maybe he is learning ballet. Although I am not sure he can pull off wearing a tutu.

Oh No !! Bruce the seats are facing the wrong way!!! This is going to be a great looking car when its finished, now you need Boomer to make the passengers, Rooster and Fred at the bar, Bob Cope and SWMBO sitting together , … you get the picture

Edited to add Ken flipping everyone off, Greg smoking a giant ceegar.

I’m suspecting this car will be used in a high speed push pull service so there is no wrong way.

Well, in theory, they are “walkover” seats and can be flipped. In practice, not so much… (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Bruce last summer we were in N’Awlins, and rode the old streetcars on the Charleston st line, at the end they kick us off the car while the conductor swaps the seat backs and changes the power whip( whatever its called) to be in the rear position, then we load up and ride back! cool deal!
