Way back when, dinosaurs walked the earth. No, not THAT far back, but let’s step back to 2012 - only 6 years ago.
Anyway, I built a passenger coach and also created a log. Last year at TrainOps, Bob asked me if I could duplicate the process. Gulp. You CANNOT turn down the BD!
So, fast forward to today. I’ve been working on it in fits and starts; lots of stops!
But, it now looks like the stumbling blocks are mostly out of the way, I think I can document the process. I’m so glad I did the log, as it does provide some half decent directions.
First up is the underbody and frame.
I’m just using Tamiya thin cement and lots of clamps.
Bob is the originator of the term “Operations Quality” so I think I’ll stick with that theory. This model will NOT be as detailed as the first one I built.
I did have some tanks left over from my years of projects, but no need to put any of the piping and valves in, as we should normally be looking at this model from the other side.
The frame is built to easily accomodate the trucks.
Although the design has changed a bit since I built the prototype, I still needed to accomodate the coupler. I used my 3D printer to make a piece.
This isn’t the final piece - I decided it was easier to print a piece WITH a hole drilled into it, rather than attempting to drill a hole. I’m not real good at 3D, but I sure do enjoy it!
You can’t see this piece once it is in place, but you can see the screw…I did have to drill a hole in the frame piece to accomodate it.
I also had some chairs left over…and told Bob we could use them for the interior.
The only downside was that I didn’t have enough for the entire coach…
Bob suggested we use some of the chairs from my Parlor Car to make a combined Parlor Car/Coach.
Meh. Too funky looking? Bob said he would create a “bar” to divide the two sections and created a model using Autodesk 360 Fusion. Pretty cool program, and it allows us to easily share a project between the two of us.
The initial piece was a bit too small (in black), but Bob redid the design and I printed out the orange copy (different filament, is all)
He had also done a wall design, and it also went through re-design and print. But I convinced him that the first one was a better fit.
Meanwhile, I ran across a carpet pattern and printed it out. It just needs to be cut out and glued to the floor.
So, now I’m about caught up in the progress photos and ready to move on from here; hopefully no more stumbling blocks! I’ve got some more supplies arriving late tomorrow, so I will hopefully have some time to work on it this week and get new pictures!
