Trestle Design & Construction on the V&T

Thanks Craig, much obliged! But notice I’m avoiding closeup shots of the piers for now… Lotsa fidget work ahead. Been losing sleep on this, so I’m relieved things were all in the same ballpark.

Oh, no don’t say that! You just have your priorities in better order than I do.

Wow, that would be awesome… seriously. That 5’ model height though would be tough for any layout to accommodate, prob have to shorten that some. You layout is on flat ground, right? No sloped areas to take advantage of? Even at a fraction of its height and length, that would be another great focal pont of your layout.

“it fits!”
“it fits on both ends!!”
“it fits on both ends at the same time!!!”

the glorious moment of a great project.

Very amazing Cliff! I can picture you out there with a transit figuring all different pier heights. Beautiful trestle!

I know I should wait for Bruce’s @Deneh review of the movie and comment on the GHA in both part 1 and part 2, but I couldn’t wait.

SPOILER ALERT:
I don’t think I’ve seen such nail biting scenes and edge of the seat action since THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK!

  • how about that step down in to the gravel where the whole trestle slips!?
  • and manoeuvring around the wool carding machine when Cliff couldn’t see either ends of the trestle!?
  • and the laboured breathing when we heard a James Earl Jones like voice saying “Leah… USE THE BASE.”
  • and that soft whisper coming from somewhere behind the camera “Leah… I AM YOUR MOTHER.” (Maybe don’t use the base)

I can’t wait for part 3 and the action figures!

Well done Cliff!

OMG!
GHA GHA GHA!!!
Sorry, Leah! Your hands were not as big, but still…
I didn’t think a man of your talents could contort in such a way as I saw in this video. “Turn left! Turn right, Walk backwards, pivot, pivot, pivot” (shameless Ross on Friends plug).
I twisted and turned in my armchair watching you. Even took a bathroom break to ease the pressure! When I visit my Chiropractor tomorrow I can get the inherited kinks out.
WHEW! I’m tired now…

Cliff…

If rubber baby buggy bumpers
bravely bump on buggy prams,
then why’d you lug your bulky trestle
with your bare-and-bending arms?

Why skip the pram with bouncy bumpers
built for bumping trestle thumpers,
when the pram could gently plunk it
with its bumper-boinging charms?

Quoth the Deneh Gee-Ha more!
*(GHA)
I guess I could have just asked why you didn’t continue to use the pram…

Cliff Outstanding !
That truly finishes that section … How are you going to top that ?
Again Cliff Great work !

Congratulations!

It was almost like watching a horror movie sitting and waiting for something to happen. I butt puckered a bit in the first video @ 1:53 into it. I also don’t think it was fair using your daughter like that. If there is a next time use someone you don’t like that way if there is a mistake on their behalf you can dislike them even more!

Thanks very much, guys! Korm, Wayne, all, muchas gracias.

Bill, I showed Leah and Linda your “spolier” and they thought it was hilarious. :joy:

Bruce, yeah, I’m still feeling the effects of the workout, both physically and psychologically.

Bill, I did intend to use the buggy, but wouldn’t you know, after trying to sell it for a couple years and it never getting used, it sold the day before! Hence the change in plans.

Thanks Sean, I’m truly glad you like it. :+1: :+1: :+1:

Rooster, yeah, that’s where I about soiled myself… Good point on the blame aspect, but my choices were limited since our other relatives hadn’t arrived yet for T-day dinner.

FWIW, the trestle was sliding around way too much, because I didn’t want to screw it back down to the jig. The jig is floppy and heavy, and might have broken the back of the trestle. I should have waited for more help to arrive, that would have really helped. Lesson learned!

Cliff,

I’ve been following along in awe of the fine craftsmanship on display during the construction of the trestle. By now, I shouldn’t be amazed by anything you tackle, but once again you’ve far exceeded my initial expectations. Thank you for allowing us knuckleheads to tag along on this journey with you.

Now, the million dollar question: What’s next? :joy::upside_down_face:

Great job getting it placed without damage. That alone was a feat! I didn’t watch the whole film as I still don’t have sound hooked up on my PC. I’ll watch it on my phone soon!

I watched with bated breath . . .

If I ever had room big enough to model that trestle in 1/29, I’d be a lot weathier than I am now in terms of land and hobby funds. :joy: At that point I’d probably be able to afford a building to house an indoor version of the branch line. I think there’s only been one model done of the trestle in N scale.

One of the few bridges I ran over and looked down and was a bit worried. It had a 10 mph speed limit over it as well. In the next few years it will be converted to a walking path. I’m not sure if jump to go walk on it.

Dan, you’re too kind! Thanks very much.

Next I think will be some fairly tame stuff by comparison, but lotsa fun for me at least.

Thanks!
Cliff

Tell me about it, I kept having flashbacks through the day, eesh… :flushed:

Glad you like it Jon, thanks!

Yep, a tough challenge. And now I’ve got a better idea than moving your layout to your roof.

So… maybe a 2 foot high model, reaching down near your lawn. You could make a sign saying something like “imagine this bridge going three feet further down.”

Oooh, and maybe make a vertical section of the full-height bridge inside a 6" pvc pipe, with a light at the bottom, sunk down 3’ into your yard, to show how tall the bridge was. You’d look down into its upper end, corresponding with track level, and get that view. Yeah, that’s the ticket!

Can’t be topped!
Maybe next time, don a Blue Crew costume for the video! Your daughter can wear the Smurfette costume…Well maybe not…she would never go back to your house again and move stuff.

Amazing work, Cliff! It looks great in its spot.
