Large Scale Central

Trestle Design & Construction on the V&T

10-4, but I want it to match the rest of the layout’s track.

Thanks Sean.

Me too !

Cliff, the 3-point track gauge is intended to widen the gauge on curves.

Don’t matter Pete. That trestle won’t see any trains as it’s only of visual interest. Basically yard art.
That’s only if it makes it outside unscathed.

That looks great!!!

Sorry Rooster boy, i like the guard rails.

Thanks Pete. I tried to find instructions yesterday morning, but didn’t see any. That would certainly do it, if the gauge was turned to have the single contact point in the inside of the curve, and the double points on the outside.

But, water under the bridge now. At least my rails are set 1mm broader than the flex track everywhere else on the layout.

Spiking done.

Cliff,

Honestly I was thinking perhaps you should just protect both sides of the trestle with 1/2" black iron pipe?
Remember when you bore the uprights you need to go down at least 6’ deep to get below the frost line then fill about 3’ up with different sized aggregate stone on the bottom then backfill with concrete and not that premixed shit either. You need to mix your own and watch the lime content considering you are setting iron uprights.

I drew you up a quick 3D sketch for reference.

The handrails were a last-minute adder, and there’s a number of things wrong with them. Mainly the refuges should have been 2x as wide for both barrels and handrails (both afterthoughts). And the posts seem way big. The effect is sort of toy-like.

However, the design approach basically worked, and overall I’m happy with the (10’ rule) outcome. Unlike the straight trestles, this is non-proto freel-lance and I’m living it up.

My section forman said, “What the… How is anyone supposed to get that out?!” He swore a bunch more than usual. We need to have a talk.

FWIW the posts are 1/4" OD ABS tube (sanded) with 1/8" nylon panel plugs CA’d into the top. The posts don’t make sense at all, except they were easy to install (what I cared about), being screwed from the bottom of the ties. The “tarred” rope is 1/8" black nylon.

If I were to do it all over again, I’d have made the refuges a lot bigger, made the post-bearing ties longer, and used 3/16 rod for posts and also smaller rope. But this was a quick burn design: sketched on Friday, parts ordered then, parts received last night, handrails created today.

On to installation concerns… Like how the heck I’ll kick this pooch out the door.

It sucks! Tear it apart and start over but not bad for a test mock up

Dude if I were being paid to do this, you’d be one fantastic boss!

I built my biggest trestle in three pieces just for that reason!

Decided to start over on the refuges and handrails. It looked too dumb.

I won’t be installing this coming weekend anyway, since I sprained my foot.

Stop kicking the Refuges :sunglasses:

Rooster will think, that Cliff is just afraid of bringing the bridge through the door.

I wouldn’t be surprised Korm. If Rooster wrote my epitaph, he’d say “Here lies Cliff. Lazy ass is just trying to get out of mowing the lawn.”

The new refuge platforms are done.

Sean, cheer up.

Will you be putting refugees on your refuges?
