Track through the new Engine House ?

Track is down!

First I needed to make a slight adjustment in the ladder transition piece since my concrete shelf was a bit too high. A quick trip to the table saw fixed that with a notch…

Next the roadbed transition was placed…

And attached to the concrete shelf with a single Tapcon™ screw…

Then track laid and attached to ladder…

Ready for ballast…

After these photos were taken I back filled around the ladder. This evening I’ll ballast all the track then place the house again.

Looking good.

I’d try to beat Rooster, but even he should be able to see that its not.

Now that’s funny.

Today the track was ballasted and house set back in place.

Ballast through the house…

So Steve (Aka Rooster in Training); as far as the title of the thread goes…

It’s Done!!!

Now, Track TO the engine hose is a different story.

…grinning…

Jon,

I just had a thought you might find interesting. The make a spray stuff for refreshing stockade fences, I wonder if it would help brighten the wood surface followed by a generous spray of Thompson’s or similar.

Jon, it looks good…

Great weathering on the building! It looks so real.

Bob - See Joe’s comment above. I like it just the way it is! The only think that might look better to me is if I could get a very faded and mostly worn off barn red look like some of the EBT buildings pre FEBT restorations; something like this…

And thanks everyone for the comments. This was to be a winter 2014-15 project, so I’m way ahead of schedule. Unfortunately, track maintenance was deferred while I messed with this so most of the rest of my layout is in bad shape. I need to get working on that so I can run some trains. I also need to brave a trip into the attic (well over 100F most days now) to dig out my last box of track so I can connect the engine house to the an existing switch on the main.

That looks REALLY great, Jon.

I do like your idea of red paint. When I did my coal shed, I went over to Home Depot and bought the color sample - it’s outdoor latex paint and you can have it mixed to the exact shade you want.

I weathered my wood first, then applied the paint very lightly. Then I put some alcohol/india ink mix over it.

In your case, I’d suggest almost a dry brush effect, building up the color a little at a time until you get the desired effect.

Hmmm…maybe even get two or three colors - all variations on a shade? I see some red there, but a reddish brown might be appropriate as well.

Thanks Bruce. I have some of the wood that was cut from the windows left over. I could experiment with that. I’m thinking a very thin stain, rather then paint, might give me the look I’m after. That project I WILL save for winter.

That looks great Jon nice work!

P.S. You guys hurt my feelings!

They’ll also do sample sizes in semi-transparent wood stains too. I used a blue stain on the Chandler’s Mercantile building.

I opened my last New Old Stock box of Aristo 5 foot Stainless track tonight. Purchased in 2003 - I think it’s probably tripled in value by now!, Started prepping rail for bending with my old-school bender (1 rail at a time). If “Arthur” stays away I might get the ladder finished tomorrow so I can start bending.

Where do you get the PVC for under the track?

Welcome Jasher!

The PVC is from several sources. I bought a bunch at Home Depot 4 years or so ago; they sold it under the name Trim Plank. I think they have stopped carrying it.

I work in a sign shop and we use a lot of foamed PVC board. I bring home the scrap from cuts and rip it down to 1.5". It is pure PVC where the Trim Plank is a composite with some wood content.

If you have a builder’s supply, look for the brand names Azek or Inticell. Or just ask for foamed PVC trim boards.

The Lowe’s around here still carries the TrimPlank brand. Sometimes they have the 1"x2" size, sometimes they don’t. I’ve ripped the 1x6 size down a couple of times.
