Large Scale Central

Spring

Beautiful day here today after some nasty weather Friday night/Saturday morning. Azaleas are now blooming.

Since we had 4 inches of rain, I decided it would be a great time to do a little weeding. The weeds had really crowded out the Ice Plant over the Winter on this slope. Leaving quite a bit of bare dirt after I pulled the weeds. I’ll have to see what kind of plantings I can pick up this week.

On the other side of the slope, the Ice Plant won the fight against the weeds.

Because of the torrential rains we get from time to time, there is a lot of gravel in my GRR. About 12 tons so far. So drainage is fantastic. The downside is…you see a lot of gravel. So I tried a little experiment today which I’ll continue to work on through the week. I dug up some moss from the woods and moved it to the GRR. This has worked fine in the past. The twist today is that I’m transplanting it on top of gravel. Hopefully it will live. Ralph

Ralph,

your garden is taking on a beautiful look. You must be working hard on it.

The weather here has been great recently. Sometimes cool and sometimes hot. Being very close to the sea and on a headland, temperatures and cloud formations can change dependant on the state of the tide.

Train running is reserved for afternoons whilst other duties and domesticalia are done in the mornings.

The main task now is trimming back plants which are encroaching on the ROW and picking out germinating seedlings from the ballast.

I wish we would get some nice spring weather. We are lucky if we get one nice day a week and even then it ends up being windy. This Spring has been one of the worst. Winter does not want to let go.

Nice pictures Ralph.

Ralph - Your moss might survive it it can be kept wet but the gravel tends to make that difficult :frowning: It looks good, but the next torrential rain will probably wash it away.

Yesterday went to Home Depot, had Dwarf Alberta Spruce for $7.98, got the only 2 they had plus mulch, top soil, a few smaller plants, returned home but was chilly (LOW 40’s), decided to go visit a sick friend, today it is snowing & prediction of about 2" to fall, I don’t think Spring is EVER going to arrive here in Southeast Michigan !

Ralph, I’ve never had much luck moving moss out of its’ comfort zone. Let us know how this works out.

Steve and you all, I have found that a product called MOSS B GONE (Corry’s) by Retta Manufacturing out of North Bend Washington has worked well for me. It a powder in a shaker can that you put right on the moss and it dies! It is only good for one season!

Paul, I think that Ralph is trying to get the moss to survive, unless I’ve totally misread the recent posts. :stuck_out_tongue:

No worries about it washing away. It may dry out. I could have replaced some of the gravel with soil. Which is probably what I’ll do with the next batch. But I wanted to see if it will live on the gravel. Steve, I transplanted the Moss under the “trees” a couple years ago. Seems to be doing just fine. BTW, the “trees” still haven’t been trimmed this year. They’re not usually quite so tall. Ralph

As long as its in the shade and kept moist it should do fine. I have had good luck with it on boulders ect… The key is it has to be a shaded area and keep it moist all the time.

This moss must like some sun. I’m finding it along trails and small clearings. But not finding any in the darker parts of the woods. But what the heck. It’s free and doesn’t take much time. Put a little more down today. Ralph

I like it…Hope it takes for you!

It’s Easter Sunday and a beautiful day to run trains. Because of Easter festivities, I didn’t get started until this afternoon. Pretty tough to shoot pictures with the afternoon shadows. I consider my GRR still in the early stages of construction. Still have a long way to go with the track work and an even longer way to go with the landscaping and scenery. But hey, I can run a train and have a good time. Ralph

I don't know about that. Those pictures look pretty good to me.

I agree Jon nice shots Ralph. The RR has really come a long way. Looking better each time. We finally had nice weather today. Sun in morning followed by some brief showers but not enough to really wet things. Felt good to run trains for more then an hour. Sorry no pictures had to keep an eye on three 2 year old boys. They loved the trains.
I also got all my track balasted and started work on making the logging siding longer. No pictures until the bunks are out of the shop.

Yea, had a pretty good day meownself. Got the K all wired up and ready, so here it is on it’s maiden voyage.

Made a small video, too, but haven’t figgered out that Youtube stuff yet…

Looks great, Ken. You’ll have to bring it up here and we can double-head the hill out of Majestic.
