Snow Forcast

Just finished doing the driveway and sidewalk for the 2nd time. I waited too long - there was another foot of snow. 2 more inches fell on the driveway while I was doing the walk. 1415

Bruce,

Do you use a shovel, or one of those mechanical contraptions that takes all the fun out of it?

Pictures are awsome. Snow just started up here. Too bad I cant take pictures since im at work. By the time I get home it will be dark. Will get some tomorrow after the strom.

At least for all of you, your snow will be gone BEFORE May !

Electric…Toro. Nice, because it’s light enough for me to put it in overhead storage for the summer. The year I bought it, we got no snow at all. I should have bought a new one this year. But, when it’s over a foot deep it gets REALLY tough.

Here’s an unusual sight: I-95 at 2:50 PM on a Saturday afternoon.

Saturday before Christmas it is usually bumper to bumper. I doubt if it’s ever this empty at 2:50 AM!

This latest series of snow storms is going to KILL last-minute Christmas business for many retailers. This comes at a particularly bad time for the retail industry.

Yep you got me there Al 14"

LOL Very true. You are in a different world up that way. You are probably sweating looking at our pictures. 20 degrees is nothing compared to what you get. As much as I love snow I dont think I can handle it up by you. Ron you have to join in the fun and post some shots from alaska. Would love to see them as well.

Mechanical contraptions! We don’t need no stinkin mechanical contraptions

That’s about 200 feet of driveway I cleared with a coal shovel. We hadn’t had more than 3 or 4 inches since 1993. Don’t even have a snow shovel anymore.

The dog doesn’t seem to mind the snow.

My poor Cedar trees, on the other hand, are crushed down to about half their height. Ralph

I have a feeling many will be calling out sick monday and tuesday to make up for the weekend lost with x-mas shopping. I just have to get through the next 2.5 hours at work with no accidents or lost hunters and Im off until the new year.

Great shots. I love that part of NC. How many acres do you have and how far is your nearest neighbor?

Where do I call in sick? ;)

Dang, now that I’m retired, I don’t even get Holidays. :frowning:

Shawn,
I’ve got three neighbors. I can see one neighbor’s house in the Winter.
The other two neighbors are probably close to a quarter mile away.
We have 5 acres, but it’s long and narrow. Fortunately there is 130 acres of pasture behind the house.
So our closest neighbors are cattle.

Snow at Smith Pond Mill has gone from bad…

In the foreground, that lump on the left is Miracle Chair Company. The middle one is my water tower. Good thing they’re protected by the tree.

2230 last night…

We had some snow on Dec. 5th

But today it got a bit deeper - same view at 1300 today

Then at 1430 today…

Now at 1620 EST we’re approaching 18" on the back deck….

Here is a good view of the depth at the edge of the deck by the cellarwell (please excuse the Christmas Tree lights reflecting in the window…):

It was Minus 38 here last night. It has since warmed up to Minus 28 as of 1PM--STILL not balmy. AND my tracks are buried in about a foot of snow and ice everywhere (we rarely see heavy snowfall here in the interior of AK). It could very well stay in that temperature range for the next two months with only brief intervals where it might warm up into the +20s F. The first noticeable melting action usually occurs about the third week in March. The snow does not completely disappear sometimes until the first week in May. Even at that, sometimes the comfortable temperatures don't reach us until June when we finally hit stride in the 70s and maybe 80s. But THAT'S June ! You statesiders will see railroad operating weather LONG before I do no matter what.

That's about the same amount of snow as we have on the ground here. We COULD get another foot or two in the second half of the winter (Jan-Feb-March), but that is about it for here.

Snow… Ok for the holidays. Not welcome after New Years.

Sorry, I had no right to cause offence to anybody there, but in spite of being Hebrile, I had a thoroughly Christian upbringing in a couple of swanky Church of England public schools, and to me, this season is called Christmas for good reason. Like most of my relatives, I always felt a part of the Christmas festivities, coming so close, as it does, to our Feast of Lights, Hanukkah. As such it gave us yet another good reason to prolong the festivations - my Roman Catholic dad and my Jewish mom used to put up the Hanukkah tree at least a week before even THAT festival began

Did you know that American Flyer actually made an 027 Hanukkah box car…?

Thank you very much TAC. Old habits of us hard nose military types are hard to break…so MERRY CHRISTMAS and Happy Hanukkah to you and yours. My Jewish buddies at University always had a Hanukkah Tree as we Romans had our Christmas Tree and this was at a Catholic University. Who cared anyhow as long as the beer kept flowing!!!
