Radder's Cigar Store

The Cigar Store began it’s trip to the CVSRy on Monday. Being expertly handled by the Hippy Gypsy Beverage and Structure Moving Company it arrived safe and sound in Connecticut late Monday night. There are some logistics to deal with for the next short move, but we hope to have a place for it finished soon.

There is also the matter of finishing the roof treatment, some interior detail (probably photographs), and signage. We also have to do some surgery on the Big Indian to re-attach his arm  Finding the time to do all this now that it’s dark within an hour of getting home won’t be easy. It also seems I’m booked almost every weekend with something

Thank you Dave

HELP!!! I’m trapped in this building and I can’t get out!

You are quite welcome Jon…I’m glad the store made it safe and sound! I cannot wait to see what kind of computer magic signage you will make for it and don’t be afraid to overkill on signage as I feel that will only add to the look of the building. I think some good ideas were passed around for the era and I want to see your Alco lash up blowing by it as I now have the sound in my head!! I’m quite sorry about your mirror as that really disgusted me considering that it happened about 15mins before you left. I learned after you left you had a dog with you??
It was a good time with all you guys!!

Yes - Snowflake the dog was sleeping in the car while we played. She’s used to that.

Don’t worry about the mirror. It was only the glass that was lost and that should be easy to replace without too much cost. The mounting was not damaged at all. I had a thought to take it off when we first arrived. I don’t know why I didn’t. It takes about 30 seconds.

The Cigar Store has made it inside and is temporarily resting across several tracks of the indoor division. I was thinking of setting it across a couple of flat cars to simulate a rail move for some pictures - once things calm down here. We’re off again on Saturday to New Hampshire.

EDIT - Pictures of the Columbus Day Run at Dave’s are posted in the Fall Fun thread in the General forum.

Went antiquing with the wife this afternoon and saw some really bitchin’ tin signage with tabacco and alcohol adds on them…

As reported earlier, Dave’s Big Indian Cigar Store arrived in the CVSRy yards in early October. The CVSRy’s crack camera crew has been busy on other assignments and wasn’t able to get down to the yards until today. They turned in a few photos this evening, the best of which are presented here for your perusal… The Hippie Gypsy Beverage and Structure Moving Company transferred the building by crane from their road vehicle and placed it on a pair of flat cars in the CVSRY’s Tyrone Yard. Passengers awaiting the next excursion at Honey Grove Station contemplate the next move. [url=lsc.cvsry.com/CigarStore_01-1200.JPG]

The railroad will not be able to move the building this way because the yard feeds a single track main. The future site of the Cigar Store still needs prep work that may be delayed until spring. EDIT: I just need to add a comment - Those 6 panel doors are awesome  Thanks Dave.

Looks like Big Indian Cigars is about to receive a right nice structure there Jon. Have the owners decided on a roof yet?

I have two thoughts (I know, that’s a lot, but cut me some slack)…

Option 1: Spray texture paint technique developed by Richard Smith. Easy, fast and I have the stuff in stock.

Option 2: Ultra-Fine wet sandpaper applied in overlapping strips to simulate rolled roofing. I have the sandpaper in-stock but I’m not sure how it will hold up.

With hose huge picture windows I’m going to have to come up with a fairly detailed interior in the foreground. I can use photos for the background. 2nd floor will probably just get the photo treatment, unless I can find an appropriately clad female figure to dress the window. Refer to the prototype article as to what the upstairs / back room was during the gold rush.

Watch it Jon, you’ll have us all seeing boobs nice pert ones

That rules!
If the doors need replaced you know where to get them. Take the dang thing apart Jon, I made it that way so you could molest it. You have the basic structure now mod/analyze it and no more bitchin’ about bird houses !

P.S. If Dave M goads you I’ll call up the boy’s to fix him on Valentines Day.

It’s been over a week so any progress or is the crew too busy makin’ bathtub gin in the back?

Got it partially apart. Need to drink some beer and contemplate. I realized that my thoughts of a printed interior aren’t going to fly. There is just too much display glass in the front. Might be able to do some printed background, but it will require foreground detail.

The 2nd floor is being weighted trying to get it flat again. If weight alone doesn’t work, I’ll try a warm oven.

Does the lower part of the rear wall still slide out? I didn’t want to force it and it looks like you might have glued it.

Where’s Kalijah?

I hate it when I don't even understand the question.

Obscure reference to a Hank Williams song about a wooden Indian. I had to Google it.

The 2nd floor just plain ticks me off. I have had nothing but trouble with that 1/8" plexi warping in the sun(roof wise) and that is what happened in it’s short amount of sun exposure. Be prepared for that on the main roof if it see’s the sun directly! Had the same issue with my Eberly Lumber Co. build, a few hours in the sun and it looked like the Atlantic Ocean with all the waves.
I think I glued the rear lower half and I’m sorry I did but I needed to in order to stabilize the rear half (side to side). Honestly Jon it was whipped together and not much focus put into things(sorry),was being my typical smart ass self when that all went down but enjoyed doing it and hoping you can make something of it!
Editing to say it’s not plexi it’s Chemcast Acrylic.

Dave - No apologies - Please!!! I asked because I saw in the photos that it was out at one time, but when I looked at the model it seemed to be glued. And don’t worry about the floor either. If I can get it to flatten out I could try putting some exposed roof beams in to help hold it flat. I have plenty of extra small cedar beam pieces left over from flatcar mistakes  Could do the same with the roof before it warps. Anyway - been thinking about decorating and was cruising the web looking for cigar art. This opens up a whole new can of worms. There are literally thousands of cigar box and label images on the web. Here are a few of the 40 or 50 I downloaded tonight…

Take a listen to Hank Jr. and Johnny Cash singing the song. Great!

Thanks for the musical history. I’ve heard the song, but never knew the name or spelling of it. Another lesson well learned and enjoyed by asking a question.
