Radder's Cigar Store

Cruising the web looking for old images to use in and on the cigar store, I found this old Buffalo Bill poster…

I thought it had a nice image that would make a fitting sign for the cigar store. A little time on the computer with Photoshop and we get a nice sign for the building sides.

I won’t be able to blow it up, but it prints out at 4 1/2 x 6 inches, which is plenty big for a wall sign. I like it, but I think the lettering at top needs either black borders or a darker background. What do you think ???

Now that’s kewl!!

I would make the big letters the same red used as the background on the smaller letters.
I don’t know about that name though  I like “Rooster Dave’s Big Indian”
Ralph

Thanks guys -

Ask any sign maker and he’ll tell you red letters are a no-no, but I might experiment with that. Might require some stroke (outline) so they don’t blend with the background. I did a print with some black stroke. Looks awesome on photo paper, but I’m not completely happy with it yet. The day is young.

Ooooooops. I’ve used plenty of red letters. Why is it a no-no?
My red seems to fade. Is that the reason?
Ralph

Red is the hardest color for human eyes to see. It doesn’t stand out from a distance unless there is a very sharp contrasting background, like white. I did give your suggestion a try, but I like the white better, especially with some outline stroke and drop shadow. All colors fade. It really depends on the inks which colors fade worst. I have a large color print two PRR steam trains going around Horseshoe Curve that my neighbor gave me before he passed. It hung in his living room, near a window in the sun for years. There is no blue in the photo at all. Everything has a green cast. This version just came off the printer and I think it’s a keeper…

I guess the traditional fire engine red was a huge faux pas ;) Lettering looks good. Very cool, even if you didn't go with the "Rooster" idea :D Ralph

Yep - I like the border on those letters.

Nice work Jon. Doesn’t exactly look like Dave but not bad at all

Installed some temporary signage to test the fit & look. These are printed on regular photo paper and attached with a small piece of double-sided tape. The final versions will be printed on adhesive backed vinyl and oversprayed with a fixative to give them some moisture resistance. Ralph - For the front signs I did use a very dark red  [url=lsc.cvsry.com/CigarStore_04-1200.JPG]

Jon, That’s too cool…but you need to slap signage all over that thing. Love the start!!! Was in Gettysburg today antiquing and saw some tin signs for Moxie cola and Sunbeam Bread. Plaster the heck out of the lower half with that stuff, maybe a circus poster…etc…GREAT START! I put all that white plastic on the lower sides for such. If the sign sucks just scrape it off and add another. You could always bore a 2" hole in the front and fill the thing full of seed if you wish?..please for nostalgic purposes put this guy peeking out the upper window.

BTW also found scale gargoyles for someone else! You guys rule! Editing to ask how you like your new camera now that your becoming familiar with it? I think I want a new one myself.

That’s the plan. Found some really neat examples of that while surfuing last night.

I have a 5 year old niece who comes by regularly. I don’t want to scare her

I like it a lot and I’m still learning.

Thanks Jon!
I’m very simple(slightly complex) as you know!
Enjoy seeing two seperate talents put together.

I attempted to repair the 2nd floor warp in the oven last night. 300 degrees with a casserole dish full of water on top for 20 minutes. It got nice and flat while hot. I let it all cool in the oven overnight. The acrylic really wants to stay bent. By morning it had lifted the dish almost an inch off the oven rack.

Now I’m thinking pre-heated bricks - about 6 of them. If that doesn’t work we’ll have to go to plan B.

Yeah it's called ship the dang thing back to the builder and have him make you a new floor from PVC. I don't understand why that material acts that way! NO MORE ACRYLIC ROOFS OR FLOORS FOR ME!

David, I bought .10 Acrylic from Lowes and it warped severely.

I now buy a product called “Flex O Glaze”, by the Warp  Brothers, sold for window replacement.
It cost me about 1/2 what the acrylic from Lowes cost me.
I haven’t had any warping problems with it.
But to be safe, I will laminate two sheets together doubling the thickness.

It would probably look more like Dave if he had put that rooster on his head.

It also needs a couple old pharts sitting out front playing checkers…

Note to self ...contact Ray and have him whip up a Ken Burnt and Dave Marconi playing checkers on a pickle barrel for Jon! FEAR THE ROOSTER!!!!!!

Yeah …what’s up with that???
Have had no issues with windows or side walls but they are 1/8" thick… I believe it’s an internal heat issue. The only reason I used the acrylic as it was left over from an interior storm window project here and they haven’t warped at all…

JON,
Seriously you need to think about shipping that roof and 2nd floor back to me and i will fix it with 1/8" pvc board.
The acrylic apparently needs a lot more ventilation than the other materials?
