I can get large scraps from work but I'm concerned the heat process from the laser printer would melt the vinyl.
That's what I was wondering too. Would it work printing signs on vinyl without melting the stuff?

Plus would it fade like ink jet ink does?

Having burned up one color laser printing waterslide decals, I wouldn’t try printing vinyl.
I no longer use the color laser for decals either. I learn from my mistakes
Ralph

Answers that question…Thanks.

I did a little research. The vinyl we use at work is no good for laser printing, but Papilio does sell a high-temp laser compatible vinyl. Bottom line for me is it would make more sense for me to have stuff printed at work on the solvent printer. My only problem with that is talking the operator into running it in high resolution mode.

Those are some of the reasons that I went to Staples to have stuff printed on a transparency. I could have paid $25 for a box of transparencies that I might never use again - instead, it cost me a couple of bucks to have Staples print a sheet of them for me.

Well worth the money. Now, I don’t know if they stock adhesive vinyl or not, but at least I always find more uses for the vinyl. Though it is best for stuff that is NOT exposed to the sun.

Looking Good. Did you design yourself or find something you could scale down?

Bruce, I had some success printing 'stained glass' images on clear adhesive Avery labels. Getting them to align and then cutting them out was tricky, but then I stuck them to the clear window styrene and it looked fine. But it still cost me $xx for a pack of labels which I hardly ever use . . .

Al, I'm not THAT good at design. :o I always manage to find something on the web and I even found the oval windows there. Did the same with the carpet on this build. There's lots out there. It is amazing how things have changed since I started modeling way back last century. ;)

So will it have lace or paisley curtains with roll up fabric blinds and gold tassel pulls?

Window detail looks great Bruce! Since the cars won’t be sitting outside all the time do you think vinyl printing will hold up okay?

I like the seats very much too as well as their spacing. Sure beats the usual spacing ala Bachmann where the passengers must have their legs cut off to ride. Think I’d prefer to walk. hehe!

WOW Bruce
Very nice

Those windows certainly add a lot of character to the car

Oops. THOSE windows are from my parlor car - an earlier build. Though this one will have the double arched windows, but I'm not going with any stained glass, since it's just a coach.

Sorry, I didn’t read the name on the car.

The doors to the vestibule area are made up of three pieces.

The first two are the “skins” to the door and are laser cut styrene. The inner door is made of clear styrene and sandwiched between the other two pieces. I cut the styrene to the size of the door.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t thinking when I painted the skin - I should have painted two of them the inside color. So, a bit of delay while the other side was repainted. Too bad I didn’t realize this until AFTER I had glued the clear styrene in place. I painted the ends of the side pieces, as I didn’t want to have to mask later. These were painted inside AND out with the exterior color; I thought the inside of the vestibule would be fine in that color.

These are then glued in place. Tabs on the interior partition walls fit into slots on the side pieces. There are also some tabs on the bottom of each side that fit into the floor section. The vestibules are made up of multiple pieces; I first painted the INSIDE pieces.

Note that in the production model, I asked Alan to eliminate the tiny pieces and little slots - they really don’t add any strength to the assembly. Best bet is to just bevel the edges a bit and glue them in place. - They WILL be covered by exterior skin later.

I wish I had taped the edges to be glued on the side pieces BEFORE I glued the sides in place as it made scraping the paint a tad more difficult. It turns out I glued my chairs too close to the walls - I will have a bit of trouble gluing the inside window frames in place. Hehe…all sorts of things I should have done differently.

You’re the Beta on this one. Just makes it easier for the next guy. Good work, Bruce!

Despite all the troubles, it seems to be coming together quite well…

No kidding. Thanks for making all the mistakes, Bruce. Mine'll go together much smoother now that I know what not to do! :)
