126" B17. Oh wow!
**Landrel Brown said:**Then I have to finish up a cockpit for a new 126" b-17 that is coming out soon…
Dang, man, that beast could probably airlift your Annie!
And the pictured work looks grand.
OK OK Ok so your busy, your forgiven. (glad you took it as a joke, because I was just kidding) I just love the progress on your layout and it is fun to watch come together. Not to mention you have some very creative ideas that I am robbing (shhhh don’t tell anyone but I made tree this weekend using your foam, bondo, and weeds from Hobby Lobby for the challenge)
And besides that Korm went and got himself sick so we haven’t had any progress from him in ages so I am relying on you to fill his shoe (Korm that to was a joke, but I hope your getting back to being better so we can see your work again.
I am wanting to get rolling on my indoor layout and you, Vic and Korm get the creative juices flowing.
I use to be really big into model airplanes. I even had a couple kits of my owns out there. I then fell into making Cockpit kits. That took up a lot of time and I just kinda quit flying. I spent so much time at home that I fell back into trains…
This is the largest plane I built. I built it when electronics (batteries) where becoming practical for large model Planes.
This is a 146" Halifax. I drew the plans up from scratch and built everything but the landing gear and the electronics… It weighed in at about 50-55 lbs.I could get 8-10 minute flights with it.
wow!
what scales are your planes?
i’m visioning a military narrow gauge train bringing the boms to the birds.
devon wait two or three days, then you’ll see my newest missdeeds
I would love to get into model planes, but I just don’t need another expensive hobby. That is a beautiful plane.
I can assure you…building scale model aircraft can be expensive…especially when they crash!!
One of the “aces” here in the UK wiped a out a gas turbine powered model valued over $10,000.
A real blaze of glory!(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)
Thanks Guys,
The Halifax is about 1/9th scale. I am not sure what I had in this plane . Most likely $1500-$1800. It was built totally from scratch . I have more in the motors and the landing gear than anything else…
The hobbies are comparable in cost … But i have not crashed a locomotive yet…
BTW the Halifax is still flying. I let a group of friends keep it for me and fly it.I told them when it finally goes in just bring me what is left…
It was built back in 2008-2009

Hey Devon,
I did get a little done today…I had moved all of my power over the top of the layout. That was a mistake. I need power under the benchwork. So I added wire down the pole and added 3 outlets under the benchwork…
There I feel better know. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)
yes, just below the table, where one needs the juice. (and best laid in a way, that one does not hit the cables, when drilling into the table)
Really, you need the metal covers on those outlets, the plastic covers have edges you can snag yourself on. Trust me, you only need to snag yourself once and you will see what I am talking about.
David why is it that we learn so much from you because you have injured yourself.

Landrel,
From your pictures I can see that the outlets you installed vertically beneath the bench work are installed upside down. The ground socket s/b on the bottom.
All of the outlets are under the bench work and I will not be close enough to snag on one… They will be behind a valance once I get around to making it…
You know I have wired my whole basement and have never even paid attention to which way I put the outlets…

That was obvious. It sticks out like a sore thumb to a retired electrician. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
Jeez Joe,
First the grammar police now the outlet police. . .(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif) Is there an actual reason they are upside down, or is that because that is the way we have always done it? I am genuinely curious because conventional practice doesn’t always make practical sense and I am wonder if there is some good reason it is always done that way. I built a 700 sq ft addition to my house by myself and I learned much about it in the process but not being an electrician many of the things I was required to do (or just should do because) didn’t make sense. Like putting an outlet in a place where it will never get used above a set of stairs at head level because you have to have one ever so many feet around a wall. When I questioned it I was told it had to be there because it was code. Well I get that but why is it code to put an outlet somewhere that makes no common sense.

Hey Ty…wait 'til Joe Z finds out the first thing I usually do is break off those darn ground wire third poles on chords and power tools and computers and appliances. That way I don’t have to worry about three-prong outlets.
And, actually, MY electrician deliberately installed some of my outlets “upside down” so that I would know which ones were three-way connected to the light switch! So ha! (And, by the way, on the horizontal box installations…which way is up or down then?)
Now I better get to work on my challenge build!
edit: You turned 50? Congratulations. You should know that once you turn 50 you automatically earn the right to do a lot of things with impunity that guys under 50 get in trouble for.
Don’t forget after 50… never trust a “fart”
