Thank you Dave. It is great of you to provide these for us to have fun with. It is truly appreciated.
Dav:’ I am in this challange. I am building something special, JUST FOR YOU! Larry Brewer, Farmington, NM.
Thanks for the feed back on the Coke cans Craig, Devon and David. That is what I thought but being the new kid, I wanted to make sure I didn’t break any rules.
@Dan You bought the beer, the cans are leftovers, and are free. Have you ever saw a place that actually sells empty cans?
@Larry B. Welcome to the fun. I need a wayside freight/oil terminal. Lets see what you can come up with.
@Craig I figure that the paint and glue falls into the same category as what I was saying about the Ink. We go buy a gallon of TightBondIII and use an ounce. Who cares?
@ ALL… Remember Rule #1… Lets not get into the nit picking. If you have to buy a 36 inch piece of brass rod, because thats the smallest length that they sell, just to use the two inches you need, count the 2" worth not the whole thing. If you have to buy the 4’ x 8’ piece of exterior plywood for $40.00 just so you’re building will hold up outside, count the 3 sq. Ft you use as 1/11 @ $3.63 and be done. Honor system!
@ALL… Some of you should have gotten your stuff today. Congratts… Devon, don’t worry about the drooling on them there are real alum., You can touch, handle, fondle and dream, but no cutting or building yet…

Dave,
The only reason I mentioned it was because I thought the first, original challenge started by MIK (and subsequent ones) always said “$30, a bottle of paint and a bottle of glue”. You know for historical sake… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)But you’re completely right it doesn’t really matter!
Edit: this got me thinking to when the first challenge was issued… Anyone know? Edit #2 Just found the thread that I think is the 1st January challenge. Dang I didn’t realize that it was only $10…

Ok, we did it a couple times last winter, and I think we had fun. Now it’s time for another one! Subject(s): structure, non-rail vehicle, or mini scene. Size: 1 sq in to 288sq inches (2sq feet) actual Budget: Maximum of $10 in new expenditures - beg, borrow, trade, but please don’t steal whatever else you may need. This includes paint and glue. But we’ll spot everybody 1 new tube of glue and 1 new bottle of paint off the expense sheet. Fair enough? Qualifications: Must be a new project, entirely researched, planned and constructed during the challenge period. Challenge period will run Friday January 7 to Monday February 14 2011, beginning and ending at 10PM Pacific time. Giving you 37 days and/or 6 weekends. Entries with build log and materials/expense list should be posted on this forum no later than Friday Feb 18, 2011 Voting/Judging: The voting will be done by all general forum members, and will begin Sat the 19th and run through the following Friday the 25th. Judging will be based on the following: 1. Overall appearance/execution 2. Originality 3. Clarity of photo/description log. A maximum of 10 bonus points will be awarded to beginning builders to help level the field. There may or may not be a 4th category of ‘builder’s favorite’ determined by popular vote of the participants themselves. Prize? TBA OK, who’s in?
From what I could find it was 2011? I was able to find the first post that mentioned naming the challenge in MIK’s honor.

No slight to anyone else who has been / is instrumental to making it go … but maybe we ought to name the yearly build challenge after him … give it its own forum category, even, to keep all the stuff together as the future ones come and go … seems like something he’d like.

Hey Devon,
Don’t you have a book to write or something… Shouldn’t that keep you busy until the 14th? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)
Oh, so if I go and buy that table saw and use it on the build, I only have to count the cuts I made with it, divided by how many cuts it will make in its lifetime, times the cost of the saw. Huh? Now if only I could blow that past the CFO.
@Craig & All… I don’t know for sure when the first challenge was issued. I think that it may have been about 09’ or so. Someone that was around then can help us out.
For the historical record:
2016: Roof panels =800Sq Ft.
2015: 16’ Flat car, Whimsical theme.
2014: Door
2013: Gondola Kit, or a building.
2012: Finnish something you already started.
2011: Build something! Up to 288 Sq In base.
2010: Unk. Category
BTW: 2012 was the first year I competed, and I won finishing up one of my Shorty Cabeese.
I really hope that some “Old Timer” chimes in and helps us fill in some blanks.
Oh crud, finish something I started. For under $30, that only leaves about a dozen choices.
So I have a dumb question…How many square inches will the metal cover that is being sent out. I thought I saw the dimensions and coverage… But I seem to have misplaced it along with my mind…
There will be 40 - 2ft x 10ft sheets to cover 800 sq. ft. in 1:20.3 scale.
changed the railroad around some after Christmas… The inspection car was custom built from Mik. We traded some motor blocks and he built me a motor car from one… Thought I would share a pic of the car he built.
Aprox: 6 3/16" x 1 3/8" They are usually applied in an overlapping manner. Looks like 1/8" will do.
While nice for 1:20.3 they are huge in 1:24! Over 12’ long… for me.
John
John, and you can get the 1:1 ones, one…you can get the real ones in 12 foot lengths too.
My panels arrived today. Thanks Dave!!! Now I can get serious with design.

2010 was the first build challenge, and it was extremely simple. "Build something’, use whatever you have on hand just build something.
all by hand with materials laying around. No 50 questions of ‘what about’, ‘can I do this instead’, ‘Does that mean’ or any other specialty for an individual to clarify the rules. It was for fun. No prize just something to kill time over the cabin fever months. And you adhered to the rule because it was simply be honest. Don’t cheat unless that is the kind of person you are. You have to live with yourself and integrity counts

This should be the heart of it. I just love participating in this because its a fun way to kill time and see what everyone comes up with. I like how Dave is trying to continue the tradition, I don’t mind a few token prices, and I don’t mind everyone wanting to play by the rules. But participating on the honor system has to be the main purpose. Thanks for reminding us that this is just for the fun of it.

Yeah but… one could also get shorter… just sayin’ and not really complainin’
No mention was made of cutting them and I’m not keen on using up the trimmings so we’ll adapt.
John
With the help of Dave M. I found this from Mik.

That was in 2011, and he references doing it a couple of times in the previous winter (2010) SO… As of right now it looks like the first Challenge was 2010, unless we can find something sooner. I’ll edit the post.
It was sooner …ask Ralph
I’m thinking 08 but I don’t know cause I sold my Amtrak baggage car to John Miller and it’s dated on the bottom so ask him
EDIT!!! Vic voted for that car when it was entered and it’s his fault for making me go ballsdeep into Amtrak…don’t let him fool you he has that fetish as well! Don’t know what happened to his Great Trains set though.
perhaps he can enlighten us?
