Mik's Build Challenge 2016

@John, You can cut all the lumber you want to, Who am I to stop you. BUT, you can’t use it for the build challenge. You should have done that yesterday. Prior planning…

I’m confused. I don’t see any mention in the announcement post about no cutting. How can one scratch build something without cutting? If you meant no cutting of the panels, that makes more sense and I can deal with that.

MIK’s Build Challenge 2016

Let the fun begin.

All aspects governing the Challenge are to be applied under Mik’s build challenge Rule #1

Rule #1: Remember this is a “Fun Build Amongst Friends”

The 2016 challenge shall be:

Build What ever you would like under the 800 Scale square feet of corrugated roofing panels I will provide to you.

You will have 30 build days, and a Max budget of $30.00

TO KEEP THE PLAYING FIELD EQUAL (and here is 1/2 the challenge): Each participant will be provided a bundle of 40 corrugated panels. The panels come in standard 2 ft by 10 ft. finished size. These panels are correct to scale and size for 1:20.3 and 1:30. There is overlap built into each panel so that the finished size is 2 x 10 Ft. I have had these panels used by people in 1:22.5 and 1:24 Scales and they “Look” good. Like wise the 1:29 and 1:32 crowd use the smaller size. Also provided with the kit will be 50+ scale ft. of material for ridge or valley flashing. Any other Scale users are on there own to provide the 800 sq Ft of panels in their own scales ( 7/8, 1 1/2”, O, On30 etc.)with my approval [PM me].

The Final Build can be any size or shape that you want.

You can build it smaller then 800 Scale Sq ft. If you build it smaller then 800 SqFt. ALL THE ROOF MUST BE COVERED WITH THE PANELS. You may use the extra panels as you see fit. Siding or fencing or hog trough comes to mind.

You can build it bigger then 800 Scale Sq. Ft. If you build it bigger then 800 SqFt. YOU MUST ROOF 800 SCALE SqFt. WITH THE PANELS.

TIME LINE:

Jan 1 thru 14, Sign up and let me know what scale you will be working in. You can start planning, drawing (napkins not included in the kit), gathering, but No cutting or building.

Jan 6 thru — Corrugated Panel Kits mailed to each entry. If you live out of country (USA) enter as early as possible, and Kits will be shipped ASAP.

Before Jan 14th, Build Logs to be posted in Annual Build Challenge forum on LSC. Please post your Napkins (drawings) with your first posting.

Jan 14th, 0001hr, Actual construction begins.

Jan 14th thru Feb 15th up-dates to your build log posted.

Feb 15th building ends (extended to local sunrise on the 16th if you must put in an all nighter to finish).

Feb 17 and 18th Posting pictures to the “Official Finished “ forum post [ I will start ] for judging. Also post your total “out of pocket” cost.

RESTRICTIONS: Actual building starts on JAN 14th and Ends on Feb 15th. That gives you 5 weekends to get it done.

$30 (US$ or your local equal.) is the max you can spend on materials, paints, glue etc. If you buy a bottle of ink and use two drops, don’t worry about it, if you use the whole bottle , count it.

Any item that you already have in your hands as of 1 Jan 2016, does not count towards the limit. Any “Free” item you can procure, is free. This is on the honor system guys. Refer to rule #1

All contestants MUST post a “Build Log” in the Annual Build Challenge forum section of LSC. You have to declare your intentions of what you will attempt to build in the initial post. Post your napkin (drawings) with your first post. You can change it if you want to, but you must post it. NO phantom builds to pop up on the last day! Progress posts ( preferably with pics ) need to be made often. Recommended Build Challenge forum Title “Daves 2016 challenge log”. Something along those lines so every one will know, and be able to follow along.

Yes you can add more of your own panels to your building if it is bigger then 800SqFt. BUT you must use the provided panels for at least 800 sqft.

If you choose to participate in Mik’s Build Challenge 2016, Post a reply to this thread.

Nothing here prevents me from cutting wood, as long as wood and saw are already on hand, or do not total more than thirty bucks.

You can cut wood just not until the 14th. Dave is saying no cutting is allowed until Jan 14th. Right now is material gathering and planning. After that cut until your hearts content. Jan 1 - 13 no actual building which means cutting. @ 00:01 on the 14 fire up the saws.

Thanks guys.

Yep Steve, I asked just to make sure.

I was advised that I could cut all I want BUT none of it can be used on this build… I have a problem with idle hands…

I be doodling…

Reread Jan 1 thru 14; " but No cutting or building. "

John

You have problems with idle hands. I am going to have to find something to do for ten days or I will go nuts. Well at least more nuts. I just might have to finish my loco or write a book.

I just saw this ad in the January issue of MRH… Nothing as fancy as Dave’s machine, but supposedly it works for 1/32…

These embossers use common “Tin Foil” for the panels. They do work. BUT. The panels are fragile at best. Even after mounting on a solid backing you should not touch the panels as they can be crushed VERY VERY easly. How easily, well its tin foil just like you use on your left overs. Now picture this stuff outside in a heavy rain, let alone a little hail. Anything heavier in foil won’t emboss right.

I used embossing aluminum on my barn roof. It has held up well. But I don’t know if that machine would emboss embossing aluminum. But the Fiskars crimping tool (with the metal crimp rollers) will.

Count me in for 1:20 scale. I think I can throw something together unless the baby comes early…

Aaron do yourself a giant favor and jump in. The little diesel that Bart forced you at gun point (we know Rooster put him up to it and he held you down)

Speaking with a heavy Italian accent …BART, just go hit em’ in both knees with the bat, throw their trains in the trunk and lets go!

EDIT : Because I can and to say it’s pretty clear you have thrown something together and around enough already.

Ok, I saw where someone mentioned on one of the build threads something about posicle sticks and it reminded me of a question I… Just ask the darn question Dan!!!

If we need to use an item like Popsicle sticks or say beer, I mean Coke cans, and we had them in our possession prior to Jan 1 but we still needed to eat the Popsicle or drink the bee, I mean Coke, do we have to count them as part of our build cost?

It seemed fairly ‘light’ in my mind too. Better suited for the indoor stuff than anything that can take a heavy beating from mother nature. One of the first times I’ve noticed a “G scale” ad in MRH, and the timing was right for the build.

It’s always been if you have in in your possession prior to Jan 1 it counts as free. So any full cans that are emptied can be counted as free, but this raises yet another ethical question…

Say one buys a bheer to consume after Jan 1st, can that bheer can be ethically used for the build? Or have a bheer budget? BTW Dave, I didn’t see the normal “one jar of paint, and one tube of glue” for free listed in addition to the $30 limit. I remember that from when MIK started it.

Nope anything in your possession prior to Jan 1 is not counted in the cost. It is part of the scrap bin. Now I think the fine you have to pay for being drunk and disorderly while drinking said beer. . . I meant eating said popsicle should have to count

I figure that the drink cans are trash anyway, so I count them as zero cost. But, I have a bin full of empty drink cans already, so they were in my possession and empty before Jan one.

Oh boy! I found what I want to build today and for my first time I’m in. Thanks Dave, for a very versatile starting point!

I’ve had a project in my head for almost a year that is perfect for this - Count me in for my first ever Mik Challenge entry.

My trains are 1:20 but I may cheat and build to 1:24 as this will be an accessory to an existing structure.

UPDATE: I’ve decided on 1:20. The building it will complement uses some 1:24 parts, but it was scaled to look 1:20ish or Fn2.876342981
