MIK’s Build Challenge 2016

Let the fun begin.

All aspects governing the Challenge are to be applied under Mik’s build challenge Rule #1

Rule #1: Remember this is a “Fun Build Amongst Friends”

The 2016 challenge shall be:

Build What ever you would like under the 800 Scale square feet of corrugated roofing panels I will provide to you.

You will have 30 build days, and a Max budget of $30.00

TO KEEP THE PLAYING FIELD EQUAL (and here is 1/2 the challenge): Each participant will be provided a bundle of 40 corrugated panels. The panels come in standard 2 ft by 10 ft. finished size. These panels are correct to scale and size for 1:20.3 and 1:30. There is overlap built into each panel so that the finished size is 2 x 10 Ft. I have had these panels used by people in 1:22.5 and 1:24 Scales and they “Look” good. Like wise the 1:29 and 1:32 crowd use the smaller size. Also provided with the kit will be 50+ scale ft. of material for ridge or valley flashing. Any other Scale users are on there own to provide the 800 sq Ft of panels in their own scales ( 7/8, 1 1/2”, O, On30 etc.)with my approval [PM me].

The Final Build can be any size or shape that you want.

You can build it smaller then 800 Scale Sq ft. If you build it smaller then 800 SqFt. ALL THE ROOF MUST BE COVERED WITH THE PANELS. You may use the extra panels as you see fit. Siding or fencing or hog trough comes to mind.

You can build it bigger then 800 Scale Sq. Ft. If you build it bigger then 800 SqFt. YOU MUST ROOF 800 SCALE SqFt. WITH THE PANELS.

TIME LINE:

Jan 1 thru 14, Sign up and let me know what scale you will be working in. You can start planning, drawing (napkins not included in the kit), gathering, but No cutting or building.

Jan 6 thru — Corrugated Panel Kits mailed to each entry. If you live out of country (USA) enter as early as possible, and Kits will be shipped ASAP.

Before Jan 14th, Build Logs to be posted in Annual Build Challenge forum on LSC. Please post your Napkins (drawings) with your first posting.

Jan 14th, 0001hr, Actual construction begins.

Jan 14th thru Feb 15th up-dates to your build log posted.

Feb 15th building ends (extended to local sunrise on the 16th if you must put in an all nighter to finish).

Feb 17 and 18th Posting pictures to the “Official Finished “ forum post [ I will start ] for judging. Also post your total “out of pocket” cost.

RESTRICTIONS: Actual building starts on JAN 14th and Ends on Feb 15th. That gives you 5 weekends to get it done.

$30 (US$ or your local equal.) is the max you can spend on materials, paints, glue etc. If you buy a bottle of ink and use two drops, don’t worry about it, if you use the whole bottle , count it.

Any item that you already have in your hands as of 1 Jan 2016, does not count towards the limit. Any “Free” item you can procure, is free. This is on the honor system guys. Refer to rule #1

All contestants MUST post a “Build Log” in the Annual Build Challenge forum section of LSC. You have to declare your intentions of what you will attempt to build in the initial post. Post your napkin (drawings) with your first post. You can change it if you want to, but you must post it. NO phantom builds to pop up on the last day! Progress posts ( preferably with pics ) need to be made often. Recommended Build Challenge forum Title “Daves 2016 challenge log”. Something along those lines so every one will know, and be able to follow along.

Yes you can add more of your own panels to your building if it is bigger then 800SqFt. BUT you must use the provided panels for at least 800 sqft.

If you choose to participate in Mik’s Build Challenge 2016, Post a reply to this thread.

unless I change me mind.

John

Ooh, ooh, I get to try and get another project off my “Someday” list. I’m in.

Awll-righty then… Sounds like fun! Hmmmmmmm…

Sounds like an awesome challenge! So tempting, just don’t know that I could pull off the challenge of building it in a short amount of time

Aaron, and that is part of the challenge, finding the time. On both of the builds I did, I ended up not adding all of the details that I wanted due to time constraints.

Aaron do yourself a giant favor and jump in. The little diesel that Bart forced you at gun point (we know Rooster put him up to it and he held you down) to build could use an engine shed or a bunk house for the boys during restoration. Here is the thing for may the story telling is half the battle. Make it good. I promise you will enjoy this.

It can be practical, whimsical, or ???

Good one Dave! I’ll build an ice house & platform. Napkin to follow…

John, that will be fun. an 800 sq foot ice house. That’s a heck on an ice house.

Dave,

Just for design purposes since I declared 1:24 what are the finished dimensions of each panel I will receive? And It will be 40 of them right?

About that No Cutting…

Can we make lumber?

Not cut to length as much as dimensional sticks. 2x4, 4x4, 4x12 etc…

Thanks Dave for all the effort you put in for us.

John

I love the idea for the Challenge. Way to go Dave!!!

Because of an upcoming Medical Mission trip to Haiti and really increased responsibilities at the Rural Health Center I work at in Kentucky I will need to sit this one out this year. Not much time left for modeling relaxation (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif).

That being said the last structure I need for the On30 Haiti Sugar train mini layout will need corrugated metal. Here is the prototype of a very rural Haitian home.

I would like to model this very unique structure and will be looking forward to ideas on very worn out metal roofing and siding.

I hope to learn a lot from the skilled modelers here as I follow along with this year’s Challenge. GOOD LUCK GANG!!!

Doc Tom

@John, You can cut all the lumber you want to, Who am I to stop you. BUT, you can’t use it for the build challenge. You should have done that yesterday. Prior planning…

Edit: John have you ever tried to cut a scale 2x4 in 1:32? Thats Nuts to try, But i guess that it can be done. It scales out to be less then 1/16" x 1/8" and thats for true 2x4s, 1/4 size smaller yet for the modern stuff.

@Devon, The 1:20 panels scale out to finnished w/ overlaps (side and top) to 2ft x 10ft.

Dave GOOD buddy, you are too kind. Phhhhffft (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I lucked out on me gathering of props, I be ok.

You’re the best!

John

I’m in Dave! Whatever I build will get wind tested! I have a miserable cold and will be coughing a lot on the project!

Awesome!!! Count me in the scale of 1:29 (or something that is close enough since that’s the scale I work in…the close enough scale (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)).

Thank you Dave for spearheading the challenge this year. Mik (RIP) would be proud of us all.

-snip-

Yes, I used to, but found that in my desert I need to double the thickness if I want them to last. Even thicker if I want a pin nail to bite. I’m used to working in thousands of an inch in metal. Not in 1:32 tho’ 1:24 is my mental scale … long live Cape Gauge!

In this scale and time, rough cut is the way I like it!

Bevel and sanding an edge can hide thicker stock.

John

Since I’m not moving I got to think what I am building. It will be an outhouse in 1:24. It will be a busy place. It will be serving three bars, including Mik’s Place!

Well, an idea came to mind for the challenge, and I think I can build it in a short time before flying back to central America, so count this lumber company in for the 1:20 category

Okay I’m in, i have a rough idea of something I’ve wanted to add to one of the micropizzas.
