Mik's Build Challenge 2016

All this talk of different contestants is disappointing. So many have declared their intentions yet there are only three “officially” recognized ones so far, and really only one of those (yes mine ) has kinda (napkin posted on second post of mine) obeyed the rules. I believe we are supposed to create our own thread and post a napkin. I only see one napkin (paper towel, I mean come on its 800 sq feet, it requires a large napkin) and only three build logs. I mean we have a whole 11 days before we can turn on a power saw and I already have spent 1/3 of our budget so please, please indulge me and start posting some napkins and outlandish stories. I need to be feed.

David, David, David! What part of " BUILD ANYTHING YOU WANT UNDER… I know that sometime my wording isn’t up to a 5th grade level as the US Army wanted me to write manuals to, but… a pallet , ahhhh come on, On the other hand, give it a try, and lets see how the judging goes. (I’ll bet on the side of Not Well).

Dave, I was kidding. But I don’t think the oil well is going to be big enough to use all of the metal for roofing, but if you look at the pictures in my build log, The inspiration prototype it is sided with the stuff too. That qualifies under the rules.

You can build it smaller then 800 Scale Sq ft. If you build it smaller then 800 SqFt. ALL THE ROOF MUST BE COVERED WITH THE PANELS. You may use the extra panels as you see fit. Siding or fencing or hog trough comes to mind.

Devon, we have till the 14th to start posting. Like I said, I have to do a site survey, to see what will fit in the planned space, before I can even think about a sketch. And I also need to find the truck I wanna use, so I can figure out what kind of space it will need. I still have 11 days, and being a semi-professional procrastinator, I am not going to start too soon.

Yeah what he said. I still have to make the land for my playground and fabulous fossil find.

Besides, let’s not rush our newcomers.

Hey bud, I’m dysfunctional, scattered brained and a rebel without a clue. Last year it took a stack of post its to contain my idears, you’ll get what you get and you’ll be happy to get it, ok?(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

$10 for a napkin? What was it wrapped around? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

Devon is just chomping at the bit to get started…

Looks like a fun challenge but I think I’m going to watch from the sidelines… Unless, I pull out my feed mill that needs to be covered in metal siding. It’s certainly over 800sq ft, but it’s not really a ‘new’ project.

I did start covering one part a few years ago…

Looking good!! Craig

Oh Ok I will be patient. . .not. . .Maybe quiet, but not patient.

And I only use top brand designer napkins.

I want to get in on this contest but my wife didn’t consult me and went ahead and booked us a 2 week trip which we are heading out on in 2 days.

I saw this post last night and woke up this morning thinking if the panels could be bent a bit a quanza hut could be built…

I want to enter the contest but I will be 2 weeks behind everyone.

Oh yeah, someone should post in the general tab that the contest is gearing up. I had forgotten that this special tab at the bottom of the page had been created.

Todd, you want bent panels, wow do I have a deal for you… The making process just happens to Pretezles some pieces, and for the designer look, it even wrinkles the edges, and curves the grooves.

Yah, on the other hand. You would have a much easier time putting the quansa bend in the good panels.

I’ll send ya the good 1:20 pieces.

Your IN, As for the trip, Take it with you.

Todd and Dave,

Boys, it’s Quonset hut not quanza. Quanza sounds like that made up African holiday Kawanzaa!

OK guys… I have had several inquires about the size of the panels. They a correct scale for 1:20. Confusing to some.

SO. NON SCALE SIZE. Just lay them out, with normal overlap on the sides and top, the 40 panels will cover an area of 12" x 24", that is two rolls (courses) of two feet. If you go three rolls (courses) you will cover 18" x 16 1/4", and have a couple of panels left over.

NOTE: This was never my intent to make a profit, or to go into the business of being an aluminum siding salesman. That said, Several people have asked if they could buy additional panels to finish out their project, and for other matching builds.

I don’t know what that does to the challenge rules! I.e. Someone buys enough to make a twice as big engine house as the other guy, Does that give him an unfair advantage, and negates the constraints of the challenge? It is within the $30 limit thou! But he can build bigger and still use his own panels and stay within the rules.

PLEASE your thoughts.

@Joe I own a double arch QUANSET hut, so I know what it is. I was giving Todd the benefit of the doubt not knowing exactly what was in his mind and napkin drawer.

Well, the rules did say we could build bigger. And, the entries are judged on quality, not size. So, I could go either way on that one Dave.

Rule #1 applies. I personally would not care if a price is determined and the person stays within the budget then so be it have fun. I would rather the person build something they want, need, can use and envision rather than not have as much fun because they can’t do it they way they want. If they “win” because they got more panels then oh well they win.

With that said I personally am finding it much more rewarding trying to meet the challenge of using what will be provided.

And @$30.00 a panel how far can you go with one additional panel. . . (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Let 'em buy, but denote which part is part of the contest and what parts are the over run.

I like the idea that these will become part of people’s layouts, but I’d rather the few fit the rules than to change the flavor of the MIK challenge.

Fer instance… a main building of more than the 800 and a couple of attached structures. If the attached structures will use the 800, then the main building is separate and should not be shown as part of the contest.

In the end Mongo just pawn in game of life.

A simple solution to the quantity issue. Build until you run out. What I have in mine will absolutely exceed the contest supplied quantity. I had not planned to open the back story yet, but it seems it might be a good idea at this time. At the end of the challenge, I was simply going to state that the last delivery of panels had not yet arrived on site to be installed.

However, from here it is Dave’s call. I will abide by what ever choice he makes.

Thanks again Dave for carrying on the tradition of Mik’s Build Challenge.

Dave, sell as much as you want with a free hand and free conscience. Heck, I hope you inadvertently found your way into a million-dollar model aluminum siding start-up business. Go for it.

As far as the rules…I don’t think it changes one darn thing. Thirty bucks is thirty bucks no matter where we spend it, with you or with anyone else.

Oops the spelling police caught me agin!! You guys are write it is Quanset Hut knot Quanza Hut…

I think I will scrape that plan anywhos and build a Pizza Hut !!

But my knew Garratt might bee rite at home living in a Kwanza Hut since Garratts were used in Africa…

I’ve had a project in my head for almost a year that is perfect for this - Count me in for my first ever Mik Challenge entry.

My trains are 1:20 but I may cheat and build to 1:24 as this will be an accessory to an existing structure.
