Craig, the outdoor lighting makes the weathering look more natural. I am with Devon on the rust spot on the door. All the other weathering looks almost real to the point you don’t even notice them. I see what you are trying to achieve on the 1:1, but the real one is a lot more subtle, at least from the angle of the photo. Now, I say that and I don’t have any idea what I’m doing when it comes to weathering as I pointed out earlier so take my comments with a grain of salt. Overall, I like what you are doing with the car.
Update: the rust door is currently enjoying a nice 48 hour soak in 91% isop. Moving on with other things for now.

The left panel has the white ghosting/streaking that white paint will sometimes do.
Prismacolor white pencil. I wasn’t sure if it really showed. Will have to try a photo in the sunshine.

I think your right, it does show up better. I feel bad for those indoor guys that can’t appreciate good weathering while operating. Oh, wait it’s always sunny and 75 inside!

So since I had my casting supplies out anyway, I figured why ruin the look of the model with truck mounted couplers. Broke out my Burl's draft gear and casted two sets. Now the great debate begins. Install Kadee couplers or go the whole 9 yards and install Burl's couplers that I have on hand...
Now I just have to install Kadee couplers on the rest of my fleet.

Actually; I been spending a lot of time and effort designing a lighting system for teh indoor that will allow me to simulate numerous outdoor conditions from a bright sunny day to the odd colors you sometimes get before a storm.
@Craig - You have a great eye and talent for weathering. Me - I just let the dust and crap from the floor above collect on top of my stuff :o

I don’t think I’m very good at all. In fact this is one of my first major attempts at weathering in large scale. The other stuff has all been small parts for my snow dozer build.
Hopefully I have enough time to finish coloring before the challenge ends.

Uh…you can’t argue with me about this. I’m an artist, like literally a professional artist, and I say you’re doing a great job on this. I’d put it on my layout any day.
Well thanks. I’m too humble to say much after that. I’m just trying my best and experimenting for future projects. I did some more touch up today, film to follow at some point. I would say its 90%-95% done.
So I spent a few minutes with some colored pencils (Prismacolor water), and then streaked the colors with a wet brush or a wet finger. Mostly added white, but also added some orange, dark red, sierra colors to the rust patches.
Also added casts of Burl’s 3D printed draft gear. Still need to touch up a little on the paint around the draft gear, add some weathering, and add the brackets for the airbrake line. This car will just get the 3D printed glad hand/angle cock until I figure out if I want to use Burl’s brass glad hands with some sort of magnet inside.
The missing door received a light layer of rust this afternoon. I still need to salt and tone the rust before chipping. That’s the plan for tonight or Tuesday. If you notice some new rusting has appeared on the truck springs as well. That needs some blending as well. I’m calling it 90-95% done. The last little bit will probably take just as long as the rest.
Craig, it looks better every time I see it. I find little touches that I didn’t see before. Great job.
My problem is every time I post a photo, I see more things that need fixing.
I still need:
Install a new grab iron on the roof on the “B” end. Add weathering to that area.
Blend rust on trucks.
Remove wheels, and paint the back of the wheels and axles
Weather said back of wheels and axles
Install airhose and airhose brackets. Paint, weather
Finish remaining door
Add additional tones of mud/earth color to the ends. Maybe mix some paint with baking soda to get a “muddy splatter”. Flick on with paint brush/tooth brush.
