Large Scale Central

MIK 2019 Craig Townsend Build

The wheel dust/dirt looks light … you should add some of the paint your going to use on the trucks …I’m thinking…

I agree the ends need a bit more work. This was just a light layer of ‘mud’. I’m planning on adding some more layers. The trucks get more oily black weathering as the oil from the friction bearings leaks/spreads easy. Unlike roller bearings which just accumulate rust/grime.

The draft gear needs to be painted the boxcar color as well, and blended in.

The last 5-10% takes just as long as the other 90%…

I didn’t get this done by the cut off, but I think. I have a good excuse. I took said model down to the Portland RPM this weekend. Just got back last night at 22:30. Proceeded to then go sledding with my 63 year old mother from 23:30 to 01:30.

We currently have 19" of snow in the ground here in lovely Port Orchard, WA at a whooping 200’ above sea level. Tonight is supposed to be the last day of snow before it starts raining. We normally only get 1"-2" of snow a winter. I think the official SeaTac snow totals for Feb. are getting broken by the massive amounts of snow. So despite having extra days off from school, I’d much later play in the snow instead of play trains (well until the layout gets built and the Snow Dozer finished).

Will try to take some photos tomorrow if I can clear some space.

Well I never got 100% done, but this is the last update. I still have door that needs repainting for the 3rd or 4th time. I just can’t get the rust spot to look right.

As compared to a clean car…

Nice weathering job, Craig.

That’s looking great Craig

That came out great … are you going to try another car ?

Looking great Craig! What’s next on your project list?

Hmmm he could finish this … https://www.largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/22655/snow-dozer-build/view/post_id/362424

What’s next?

Big project wise: Build the outdoor layout.

Medium project wise: Finish the snow dozer/finish my GP30 build/finish Pettibone/finish mystery project

Small project wise: Convert rolling stock to Kadee couplers/roller bearing trucks

Actually I gave a hint on something I’m working on in a completely different thread. Sean is closer than he thinks…

I did think of you when I saw this : https://www.largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/29221/custom-laser-metal-cutting

Before you responded.

Just a small list you’re working on there eh Craig (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

I’m beginning to think I may setup a temporary outdoor railroad this spring/summer. Have the to itch to run something. After we finish landscaping (which will be a few years) I’ll then build the permanent layout.

I can give you the long list if you want… (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-yell.gif)

What good is a hobby if you don’t have a list of projects to keep you occupied? It’s only 30 years or so until I retire, so I should have plenty of time to add more to the list. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)

HAHAHAHA

I’ve got plenty of lists going for me. Not only a long hobby list, but a rather lengthy honey do list as well. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I never ever want to end up with a completed list. I would be sitting staring at the wall sucking my thumb confused about why the world stopped spinning and hell froze over.

My honey to do list is long too. So much for buying a “new to us” house last October. Now the wife for some random reason insists that we paint the walls? Odd. They look just fine to me. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

LOL

Craig I hear ya on the new house thing. After we built and moved in I was like “yeah we did it!” Then it dawned on me the amount of new work it just brought. Nice to know we’re in the boat together (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)At least we can talk trains (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

For some crazy reason when we discuss paint colors, she doesn’t want BN Green, NP Orange, or GN blue walls? I think that they would nice. A nice green wall with a big white BN logo in the middle seems like a pretty good idea for a wall covering in my book.

More detail shots… To be honest, I really don’t like the door rust streaks, but not bad for the first attempt at a large rust patch. Needs to be more 3D of an effect (hairspray chipping)

When I did my PS2 hopper I also found that going from HO scale weathering to G scale weathering was difficult, it’s a much bigger canvas. I’m thinking the techniques used in HO scale are fine for G scale, the hold up is mostly in my head. I’ve been gun shy on rust streaks. But after watching Ken Patterson in the What’s Neat Janurary 2019 MRH episode he’s got a technique I want to try. The technique starts at 4:12. Then at 22:14 he airbrushes graffiti on a G scale Autorack. Sooooo gotta try this.
