Large Scale Central

G SCALE MAD website announced to close as of Nov 1

Hey Freddy.

Maybe the plebs are confusing gauge with guarantee. Most of them cannot spell that correctly either.
How about the “i” before “e” except after “c” rule?
They carry that “rule” across and continually misspell words such as weird, their and heir (to the throne for example).

Wait until you come across predictive text when composing SMS messages.
You will then know that the Philistines have almost taken over and ruined a perfectly good language.

Gauge it will be for me, along with Plough, Colour, and Aluminium. I will also try to use, There, Their, and They're, at the appropriate times. I also like Aerodrome, and Telephone; then there is Too, Two, and To.....but then I take pride in trying to use good spelling, and even while making my many mistakes; I try to promote the old fashioned respect for myself, and others, in my email use. Are we so much in a rush these days, that we have to give up good writing skills, and self respect ?
Toot rew.

Now I was pleasantly surprised to see that I am now amongst such esteemed company having had a ‘possible defamatory’ post deleted on the new UK Forum. Like Tac I also thought it slightly humorous when I posted it.

I have been wandering in and out of one Forum, or another, since 2006 and have never before had a deletion. I have been verbally attacked on more than one occasion so presently prefer to read and post on the Aristo-Craft, Classic Trains/Garden Railways and this Forum.

Noting the post by Fr. Fred I agree with what he writes. Accordingly, as I use mainly American Forum sites, I tend to use American spelling (when known). Actually my spell checker tells me when I have used British spelling e.g. colour and so on. Naturally I use the spelling of my native country on British web pages.

Regarding American place names I find that I get most place names pronounced correctly - there are always some that catch you out particularly those of French origin as they are not pronounced generally as they would be if in Metropolitan France (regional differences acknowledged). Luckily I speak with friends in the States most days and can ask there advice.

Well my Robot Chicken post was downright hilarious if your a Star Wars fan, which in in spite of the continual Wars references on the site some there are certainly not… I already have one official strike, and you only get two before your shown the door. and as I know my own sense of humor its probably only a matter of time before I post something like this:

I likened the debacle over red and green boxes and the thought to be imitations to a “bar room brawl”. I thought it a polite comment.

Maybe I should have posted on one of the days I had been having dealings with pc type bureaucrats. lol

Alan, I have to say that I find the whole sorry business about the ‘Boxer rebellion and war’ to be totally pathetic, and that’s the sad and sorry truth about it all. To me the whole affair has been blown out of all proportion to its actual importance.

Makers of toy trains come and go - Where are Bing, Carette, Hornby, American Flyer and many others who were, in their time, formative and important toy train makers?

Meh.

So Alan, how would your pronounce “Spokane,” “Wenatchee,” “Yakima,” “Sequim,” and my personal favorite, “Puyallup?”

Puh-yahll-up?

I spent a week there, I don’t think I’ll ever forget how to pronounce that one

Isn’t Puyallup where the ski chairlift was invented? (Or, was it there that the slogan was “We put the Fun in Funincular!”)

When I saw the debacle, as the usurpers picked over the bones of the ‘original’ MAD Forum, I felt that I had no intentions of allowing these upstarts to enter my domain. The upstarts are predominantly those who 'ooh and aah 'over the latest acquisition the postman delivers, complete with tantalising photographs, as the package is unwrapped to the adulation of the readers. Maybe I am missing something here???

I asked that, if possible, maybe there could be more of a modelling theme on the new site, as oposed to the predominantly ‘shake the box’ crowd with the hefty credit card limits. I was shot down in flames by one of the loudmouths, who accused me of trying to manipulate the proposed new forum to my own selfish ends. He was roundly supported by the others who use their credit cards on a regular basis, keeping the British postal service busy.

Without being facetious , there is little that one could offer me in so far as advice on the topic of model railroads and my intent in posting on a site would be for the benefit of others. I will not post on my latest purchases simply for the sake of my own ego!! These people give the hobby a bad name and spell the end of the hobby, as a ‘hobby’. These people could be purchasing anything, as their contribution does little to increase any skill level in our hobby.

In case you have missed my point, I wil not be joining the new site, moderated over by Mistress Lisa. If I want this level of moderation, then I will rejoin that other heavily-moderated site and that will not be before hell freezes over (irrespective of the impacts of global warming).

Hmmmmmm!!

Moderated by a mistress. Conjours up all sorts of lascivious thoughts. I wonder what one needs to do to qualify?

Dear All - I fear that I may be joining in with Tim - certainly I share 99.9% of his views and opinions. I can’t deal with foamers anymore than anybody else, and if I didn’t have the odd good year [I’m a self-employed consultant in a rather esoteric field], I’d be down in the second-hand New Bright trains area of collection, and pretty grateful to be there. Like most of us do, I’d guess, I buy in the good years, and then go without in the lean ones - my little collection, yes, including some red-box stuff, was started in 1968.

As Tim notes, the glee of seeing the gradual appearance of a giant red box, and the subsequent ‘stop action’ of the grand opening, has little to do with running our trains, leastways, to me. I don’t share this ‘look at me’ theme that seems to follow some folks around from one site to another.

To me, the whole point of our trains is that it doesn’t matter whether you check-book your way into the extreme upper echelons of Gauge 1 live-steam or build your trains out of sardine tins and bottle tops, like my friend Kormsen does down in deepest Paraquay - a billion miles from the nearest store.

So long as what you share is based on happiness, and not gluttony.

My $0.02, and I’m done.

Oh fer crying out loud…I posted my annual Christmas post “Raging Rudolph” on the GSC site and its been pulled and messages left that they were “Highly Offensive” and to “never post such rubbish here again” .IOWs NO SENSE OF HUMOR WHATSOEVER beyond maybe Teletubby levels.

Jeeezuz Christmas cookies I might as well be posting on the flocking Sesame Street forum instead.

For all the Monty Python references used on that site I seriously seriously wonder if ANYONE in charge there has actually ever SEEN a Python flick, some scenes in “Life of Brian” would give their obviously overtly sensative emotions a downright coronary!

I may be spending alot more time reading over there and alot less time posting…not many read my stuff anyway, no box opening rituals involved…:frowning:

Hey Vic,

It’s not as if you shouldn’t know by now, is it?

Them guys have a track record and an image to protect! hehehehe

Yeah HJ I know, I know, what did I say in my post at the top of the page?

Errgh! Its just wow stupid how low the tolerance bar is there…

It is almost as if you seem to be somehow surprised about this?

I have been in conversation off-board with a couple members/former GSM members that are not happy there or renewing their membership with the current re-formatting. Then another was bullied (by a moderator) and it finally died down when a few stepped up and backed him.

There was a lot I liked about GSM. But I am finding myself not posting on GSC as much.

The owner of GSM (Jason) did a lot for GSM, but reportedly one person finally pushed him a bit too far on a certain recurring topic that caused problems on GSM for whatever reason. My impression was the owner was a nice man with good intentions, but not a good moderator/owner as he took much that happened personally. As a forum owner myself, you occasionaly have to remove someone, kill a flame war, and (in one case a few years back) kill a kiddie porn spam attack. You cannot take any of it personally, or it will get to you. I still have one idiot that needs to mail me constantly wondering why I banned him years ago…he never seems to get it…and all I do is hit delete. Personality trait I guess.

GSC lacks something that GSM had. Not sure in my mind yet what it is/was, some I think was just a kind of jovial atmosphere, but I do know that many members I liked at GSM are not posting much or in some cases, at all.
