We know you are a well educated and intelligent individual…and folks that know me can affirm that I am FAR from Politically Correct…But in what context would that comment have been appropriate?.. Is it REALLY TOO MUCH for you to say “I’m sorry”? My 3 y/o granddaughter knows how to say it and uses it appropriately in a sentence…

I’m sorry Bart. We have a difference of opinion on this one. and here is the context http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=manuel+labour

No…You seem to disagree with common decorum… Were I to call your significant other any number of terms availible in the urban dictionary based on a photograph you would not be offended? There is NO CONTEXT for that type of statement, and I think the majority here have proven that .But alas…tis a hopeless case…changing the subject does not change the fact …once an equus calix…always an equus calix…now back to our regularly scheduled proram…

Doug Arnold,

Yes, I have a long list of places along the San Andreas fault where I want to take its picture, including Cajon Pass. Maybe I can even pass over your layout when I am down there near Cajon Pass. I hope to be out there when UP 4014 is shuttled from Colton to Cheyenne.

I was very impressed with the video Ross Mansell contributed to this thread - the flyover over trains in England. Thanks Ross! I found another video of the Cumbres and Toltec that inspires me to get some video of the UP churning along the seashore here in Santa Barbara County. Have a look at this one:

By the way, gentlemen, I should add that the great advantage of the Phantom 2 Vision quadcopter is that it can stay up for 25 minutes - that’s about twice as long as most other less expensive UAVs. That means the duration of your video is limited only by the capacity of the micro SD chip.

And another by the way, since this is a forum about photography and cameras, I should add that I will be concentrating on getting good still photos for a book I’m writing, and the fisheye effect that the Vision and GoPro cameras have can be corrected with the right software, so that the resulting pictures are just great as you can see in my previous post in this thread of the ranch.

25 minutes is an impressive flight time, thats very cool for chasing…

Art, the only thing that is missing in this video is John Wayne riding in on his horse! Great filming!

Nice video Art

Hey guys, hold on. I didn’t take that video of the Cumbres & Toltec. As I said above, I found it on line and passed on to you to enjoy. Maybe one of these days I’ll have something of my own to share.

I hope we do get to see you when the Big Boy gets moved. I do have a feeling the air traffic is going to be hectic in the pass!

It’s amazing to see what people are doing.

Doug,

4014 isn’t scheduled to go through Cajon Pass for several more weeks, but in the meantime I was out in Victorville last weekend and caught a flying camera picture of a BNSF consist going through the Mojave River gap. Maybe you know this place. Scary place to have a crash.

I liked this one of the Hells Gate Bridge.

Hi all

We have been using a quadcopter and gopro hero 3 black for filming gauge 1 meetings for about a year now and I think im just starting to get the hang of it. We use a qr x350 quad which is sufficient for our needs. So far ive found filming at 60fps and slowing it to 30fps for playback to be a helpful technique. Below is a link to an attempt at a g1mra get together

I saw that.

Fabulous, H-J!

One of our rail-fan favourite locations is the town trestle at Parry Sound - apart from the trains there’s lots of other good stuff to see as well.

Wow, those pix are truly impressive! This looks like a good time to suggest filming with no sound, then dubbing in (“looping” in the trade) in the appropriate sounds. Even just wind noise (under control) would be an improvement.

Taken with my ARES Ethos 130 with optional digital camera…

Less stable shot from a higher altitude…I was tryign to keep it over my propertyline and the wind was kicking a little…plus you need three hands to take pictures under those conditions…

Hey look…its me!

OK guys, I started this thread by saying I wanted to catch the transit of Union Pacific RR giant steam locomotive, “Big Boy” #4104, from its 55 year resting place in Pomona, CA, to its restoration site in Cheyenne, WY.

So with my P2V in hand (stock Vision camera, no gimbel, no GoPro), I went out into the Mojave Desert, and here is the result from a height of about 300 feet. You will complain that the camera is not steady - it is jumping around. So would YOU jump around, too, in the very gusty 25 mph wind that day.

That ramp is ridiculous and they do some crazy bike stunts in that video.

I got a GoPro camera a few months back and thought about getting one of those Phantom type rigs to fly it and to be able to take some airiel shots for my real estate business but when I read reviews about them taking off never to be seen again it scared me. It would be a bit depressing to see a $1000 dollars fly off.
Still those cameras and Phantom flyers are really really cool.

Have fun with it Art

Seeing $3500 or more flying off, under control of a distant thief with a ‘5MW transmitter’, was what got me off large-scale model sailplane flying a few years back.

On top of our slope, half a mile away from the guy in the 4WD down on the flat, we had a three mile drive to get to him…

But IF we could have got to him…grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Great video Art. Are you flying via the view from the camera? If not, you did a darn good job keeping the train in view.

That’s great Art.
Thanks for sharing it with us!

Yes, Jon, my iPhone sees what the camera sees, and my iPhone tells me how high the UAV is, how far away it is, what direction it is facing, how many GPS satellites it sees, and how much battery remains. The picture on the iPhone is pretty small, so that at first all I could see was a black line that seemed to be moving. I guessed that had to be the 4014 train, so I stayed with the image. We had no advance notice of its approach and knew only that it would be coming through that part of the Mojave some time late that morning. It was supposed to leave Yermo at 8 am, but the morning before, it was also supposed to leave Colton at 8 am, but got away 1.5 hours late. If I had had more time and advance notice, I could have positioned the UAV closer to the tracks and lower, but alas, I had only one crack at it, and fortunately it came out pretty well.
