Large Scale Central

February Snow

We are finally getting back to something like normal, although the snow is still deeper than my knees and I’m 6 ft 4. Cars are shoveled out, back is hurting but I’ve got advil and a very fine selection of beers from the “wall of Beer” at our local grocery.

it’s actually been kind of fun–we’ve had a bunch of pot luck suppers with different neighbors, helped dig each other out, built a bobsled run. It’s been fun

Now go away, snow

Calling for snow here overnight tomorrow??? this map shows it south of me?

Friday Night, Feb 12 Low: 25 °F RealFeel®: 29 °F Some evening snow, accumulating a coating to an inch; mostly cloudy and cold

Well, The high winds trashed my trestles. They were protected on one side by the house, a thick Cedar on the other side. In a cut too. The busted up trestle was actually smashed against the house. All kinds of things, chairs etc., are gone. Nowhere to be found. I have numerous trees blown over. Fortunately none were close to the house. Ralph

Hey Bruce is on a B double E double R U N!

Ralph that sucks.

Sorry to see that Ralph–tough break

Ralph, sorry to ssee that. Good you’re in the challenge as you’ll need that new pile driver and crane to redo that trestle.

Oh, Bummer! That must have been some powerful winds. Maybe you can get Governor Perdue to declare a “state of emergency” so you can apply for FEMA funds to rebuild.

That sucks Ralph…but it looks very fixable!

Won’t be to hard to fix.
Cutting all the down trees will take a bit longer.
Ralph

Well Ralph…build a sawmill to cut all that wood…gonna need replacement timbers etc. for trestle repairs.
Randy

I think Mik built one maybe you could have it shipped to your location for a bit.

That is a real bummer Ralph.
Hey Bruce…have you made your beer run for Monday and Tuesday? You better get hustling. More white stuff on the way for those days…uffffda! Might as well move back to Nebraska.

The Post Oak & Otter Lake RR has canceled all operatons due to 8 scale feet of snow by 4 PM with an additional 5-6+ scale feet expected before morning. Being a Texas RR it owns no snow removal equipment.

When I got home from school we had 4". Another 3+" are predicted before 3AM. Hopefully our school district will close tomorrow.

I know it pales in comparison to what has fallen along the East Coast, but by 6 pm we are only 1/2 inch below DFW record single day record snowfall[7.8"].

Roger
from snowy North Texas

Roger, it is a 12:1 effectual scale snow fall differential between Texas and the Northeast. Things don’t shut down here unless we get 24" or more. Texas I understand closes the state with 2".

Roger,
You have no idea! We broke the snow total last set in 1893 here. My house was 41 yrs old then.
30+ inches not including drifts, concerned that it won’t be gone by ECLS show at the end of March!

Update: Another possible significant winter storm looking to make impact 2/15/10. At this time many models show a clipper- like system sweeping across a portion of the Mid- Atlantic and the North East. Unlike traditional clippers this one has a very good chance of making a turn once it gets to the coast with reinforci…ng heavy moisture being sent right back into the area. http://www.footsforecast.org/

There a reason Texas shuts down with 1". The idiots here have trouble driving on dry pavement. Rain raises the risk 5 fold. Snow & ice you need guardian angel.
I have driven in snow in Colorado, New Mexico & Texas. Now I just stay home.

Ralph - Sorry for the wind damage.

Mike - Glad you were able to find humor and fun amongst the snow.

Rooster - We’ll talk as time gets closer, but I can bring a shovel and a plow.

Bruce - Hope it is all starting to return to normal.

I see things have not changed in 30 years. When I lived in Dallas cars became like pinballs during rain. Bouncing all over the place. On Loop 12 you had a hard time counting the wrecks per mile. Towing must be a good business to be in. Ralph

If you have some hardwoods down and would like my brother to come and remove for you let me know! WOW what a difference 40 miles makes! :(
