You need to bring one to MA finished or not. These are just amazing. Thanks for the photos!
I’ll probably bring one. I doubt it will be finished, but it will be close. Bench and center punched the 16 stirrup steps I need.

I was thinking of the best way to attach these. I like using escutcheon pins since they make a nice strong connection; they just don’t look quite right. I thought about getting the brass NB from Phil’s Narrow Gauge. I’ve used them in the past and they look nice, but then I’d have to order them and have to wait. Instead, I decided to square the heads on the escutcheon pins and use them. Cheap and here. Turned out OK.

Now I’m done with the sides on all four cars.

Next up the ends, and then I’ll put the floors in.
Bring em all, I have a shop!
Nice …
Whew… all the end grab irons have been bent, punched and drilled. I didn’t realize there were so many - or so many different sizes! I bought that little anvil from Micro-Mark and it works great for flattening each end.

How’d’ja do it?

How'd'ja do it?
Basically I bend them to the desired shape, then flatten the part where the bolt will go by pounding it with a hammer on the anvil. Then I center punch and drill a hole. Finally, I use the Dremel to round off the flattened ends.
A labor of love, fer sure.
Mine come from Phil.
John Bouck said:I know what you mean. Phil has nice stuff; but they just don't work on these hoppers.

Ends are done. Put in all the grab irons using the small NB. Bent some lift bars and attached them using the eye pins.

I still haven’t glued in the floors - that’s next.
Fine work Bruce. I’m really liking the build

Thanks! Maybe I’m being too careful putting on the grab irons?

When I did the EBT boxcar first-build, I purposely bent up a few of the grabs after I put the car together. Seems like half of them on a well-used car get bent up pretty well.
Yours are brand new, Bruce.
Bend them up in a few years.
Bruce brought one with him to Bob’s and the craftsmanship on those models is fantastic. Like anything else the pictures don’t do it justice.
Thanks. I always enjoy showing my work to my friends here and in person. That was a great weekend of operations! The slope sheets on the wooden hoppers were covered in some sort of metal, with angle iron at the top and along the sides.

I cut some .010 brass sheet to shape and glued it to my wooden slope sheets. I added some 1/8" angle and small pins for the bolts.

Bruce, these cars are amazing. Your wizardry seems to be ever expanding.
Dave
Wow Bruce they look good. The detail is awsome.
