EBT Boxcar, take 2?

Not to rain on anyone’s entrepreneurship, but Accucraft is releasing a model of the EBT’s 3-bay hoppers later this year with an expected street price of around $100. By the time you buy all the styrene, trucks, etc. for the kit, you fast approach the cost of a built-up version. Not that I’m trying to discourage anyone building their own, but from a realistic perspective I think most folks would more quickly be able to buy a string of hoppers than build the same–even if they only bought a hopper ever so often over the course of a few years.

Kevin, I agree with you. I think a lot of people will buy the ready to run hoppers. But there’s still a lot of folks that like to build models that can they can run on their layouts. Although I have purchased several of the AMS freight cars, I find I do not get much enjoyment out of the purchase. Yes, building my own, either from scratch, semi-kit, or kit, costs almost the same - or maybe even more than the RTR. But, I sure enjoy the building process, and I get a tremendous amount of satisfaction from my completed models. I don’t think I’m alone.

Heck, I might even buy one of these hopper kits.

Yea, I saw that they announced these, of course, after I had spent the time on the CAD for the kit. Still, there are those of us out here that want “operational quality”, without all the break-off details that the AMS cars have. Although, I probably will buy one or two of them anyway.

Good point, Bob. AMS has announced them. They’ve also announced switches to go with their track. As I recall, that announcement was about three years ago; and we’re still waiting. I’m not sure when their hoppers will actually arrive, but I’m hoping you can beat their delivery.

I’m holding out for your kit. I bought their 2 bay hopper, and it was OK, but I’d rather build my own.

I certainly see where y’all are coming from with the “build it yourself” side of things. My thought is that if I don’t have to, I can spend that time building something I want to build instead. (Like passenger cars, depots, etc.) Besides, “ready to run” for me still means at least two days on the workbench getting redetailed and repainted to my liking.

Lessee…considerign All I have to buy is 4 wheelsets and a set of KD’s per car, I can do hoppers fairly cheap…Then again…I do tend to buy styrene in bulk adn have lotsa scrap wood to mill…

Bob,looking forward to the hoppers. Any idea when the boxcars will ship? Thanks

I;ve got some wrapped Im bringing to the PO today, and pick up some more packing materials (they were short last week)…rest’ll go out in the next day or two.

Bob, great I can not wait to get started building. Who makes EBT decals in LS? Thanks

Stan “The Decal Man” Cedarleaf made the ones Bruce used on his cars. I bet he’ll be stocking them as a regular item now that there are close to 80 of these out there…

Thanks Bob. I guess you will be doing an article on building the hoppers in the future.

Im bringing the last (with one exception) of the paid-for boxcar kits to the PO today around noon. I still have three orders not paid for, and one Im about to box up for the other side of the world.

According to the nice lady at the PO, many, if not all of you in the continental US should have your packages today. Anyone? Bueler?

Hey Bob,

My boxcar came in today’s mail. Looks like I have another project to start. I have everything but trucks and couplers thats next. Looks great after inspection.

Hi Bob -

Mine arrived today too. Thank you. I went to put the materials together with the ones I bought last March and was surprised to find I had 4 unbuilt kits, not 2 :o I guess I’m going to have quite a fleet of box cars when these are done.

I’ll email you with a question on parts for the old kits.

Jon

Mine came today also. Bob said he’ll get up a PDF of all the directions soon to print off. Jerry

Mine arrived today… thanks Bob!

Bob: I would like to get one fo the new EBT boxcar kits also. Will you be offering another run in the future?

Thanks

Al

I think he had some extra ones cut. So should be some still. Jerry
