EBT Boxcar, take 2?

As did mine excellent work bob this kit will be fun to assemble

Bob, my kit came today it likes great. Thanks

Glad you all got yours. I’m having some more of the 2nd gen cut, but I also found a dozen of first gen ones. These don’t have the assembly lines, but otherwise they are identical. $20 a piece if anyone is interested. email me at rmccown at zbd dot com.

Howdy folks
I’ve PDF’d the instructions for the EBT car out of the Articles section. Note for those of you in the second run of cars, that the instructions for the car ends are not correct, since you have a BETTER version that doesnt require assembly! Also, you dont need to measure and mark the assembly lines on the ends, sides, or roof.

Thanks for the PDF Bob. Looks good. I downloaded one of GR’s web-only content PDF’s yesterday and it was useless - all of the diagrams and photos were reduced and compressed to the point of not being readable. I’m glad to see you left the full size photos.

Please elaborate on what part of the car end assembly the new kits don’t require. A quick scroll through the instructions and I didn’t notice where the new kit would be different, except for drilling and marking.

On the new kit, the car end is one piece, whereas on the old one, the peak and end are two separate pieces.

OK - I see it now. I was looking at the wrong section of the instructions. That explains the small peak pieces in my original kit that I was confused as to what they were for.

For those of us who still have unbuilt original kits, would you consider a run of just the new ends as an upgrade? I’m not sure it would be worth your effort or the cost, just a thought.

I had troubles with the PDF file to my Mac. I wrote Bob, he’s going to check into it. Anyone else have problems with it? I got all the pages, pix are fine, but the writing is not. I had earlier downloaded the PDF that someone had done of the first two pages and it worked fine. 'Puters! Jerry

It’s fine on my PC

Yea, seems to be a mac issue for some reason… working on it…

Thanks Bob,
I appreciate it, not sure what was different about your PDF from the other one, which downloaded fine. All the ones I got from Aristo downloaded fine also. 'puters! Jerry

All:

I have a question about the prototype. Were the steel boxcars the cars that were modified with roof hatches for clay service, or were older wooden cars used for clay? Perhaps both?

Also, I am not clea on whether there are any phase 2 kits available or not? The store says sold out, but some response to my earlier question indicated that some might still be available?

Thanks

Al

Al -

Bob will have to answer the availability question.

Yes, the some of the steel boxcars were used in clay service. Tim Mulina’s Quick Pic book on EBT boxcars has a good interior roof shot of car #167 showing the framing for the clay hatch in the center of the roof near the end. This car later had it’s roof replaced and the hatch covered over. For water service, two holes were simply punched through the roof on the same side of the car at both ends. A rather crude and jagged opening with no hatch.

The first of the steel boxcars went into service in 1913 and they were built until about 1916 and started to be retired in 1943. 3 of them lasted beyond 1952. The second generation cars were built in 1920 and many remained in service until the end of common carrier service. It is some of these second generation cars that were used in clay service.

Jon

bob,
A buddy printed off the PDF for me, so if I’m the only Mac guy with a problem, you probably don’t have to worry about it. If you do ever find what the problem was, let me know though.

Hi Al
I picked up some more boxcar kits today. After I go through my current orders, I should have some left. I hope to get to that tomorrow.

Jon: Thanks for the info on the clay cars.

Bob: Thanks for your response as well. I would like to order 2 cars, whenever they might be available

Thanks again,

Al

I would like to try my hand at one of these as well. Whenever they become available

Mine came Friday, the 14th of March, serendipitously, my birthday. My wife picked it up, thinking it was something she had purchased for me, and wrapped it up.

Imagine her surprise when I opened it!

Peoples…

It appears that at least one order of boxcars has not made it to its destination. Of course it was the largest, and furthest away. Can you all that ordered and paid for kits email me whether you received them or not? I’ll make it right.

I got my 3 fine Bob. Jerry Barnes
