Cranking some more out. Got the cab floor done. Made a water tank and the stack screen. Also made the friction block screw handle thing-a-ma-jig, but haven’t installed them yet.
“handle thing-a-ma-jig” must be the technical term since you are clearly sincere about wanting to learn everything about these engines. Right?
Done already??? Awesome!

Man I like this
Super job so far on that boiler Devon. If not for a crane it would make a nice steam donkey on skids.
The model of that blue steam shovel is awesome.
So I am still working on the cab. Here is the bottom of the cab with the sheet of “steel” that the cab will pivot on the spider bearing. And the other part with the spider bearing on will mount to the deck of the flat car. I have decided that the way they built this in shop was to take off 8’ of the decking of an old 20’ shorty flat car (not built yet) and bolt on a piece of plate steel for the turning mech.
So the pivot mechanism is several pieces styrene tubing that will slide over each other and rotate on. Then the outer ring is attached with sewing pins and the bearings themselves are fishing beads I had for lure making. It rotates very smoothly.
Jon a steam shovle will be a deep in the bucket list project.
Some mock ups of the cab
Is it done yet?
Not hardly john. Not hardly
Very Nice Devon… I want to build a steam donkey for a friend of mine that has a logging Ry. If you don’t mind I will use your ideas on the boiler… keep up the good work!..

Design/idea theft is the highest form of flattery, steal away.
I was begining to think something was horribly wrong with this project. Then it dawned on me that I haven’t gotten hurt yet. So last night I made up for lost time and sliced both index fingers. Mangled the left one pretty good.
There is blood on it we are back on track
What, you don’t have enough physical problems? You have to add more?
Let’s be careful out there!
Wishing those heal well and soon.
Devon, there is nothing in the rules that state you must injure yourself in order to participate. READ the rules if you don’t believe me (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif). Be careful.
I think it was a cleaver intro … did you catch the neat typo?
Into a new rusting technique!
Ok I get you cut one index finger, how in the hell did you manage to do both at same time?? You using power tools? Sheesh, Devon we need to send OSHA To your shop and protect you!
No not at the same time. About ten minutes apart. I put a fresh blade in the exacto knife and on my first little tiny trim just a nibble off a piece I proceeded to whack my left finger good. I almost never cut while holding pieces in my fingers. I cut into a cutting mat. But the one time, yep right into the finger. Then I stabbed the right one with the knife laying on the bench. Just stupid
And John with all the iron in blood it does make for a nice rust color when dried
