Devon's 2019 MIK build- steam crane

I had two ideas for this build almost immediately. The very first idea was a steam wrecker crane. The second idea was to build my Beyer-Garret logging loco. Both of these are for a single larger project of building a 1:24ish MOW train for the Canyon Creek Railway. Awhile back I built the foreman’s car for this train which includes a boom rest for the eventual crane.

Canyon Creek Foreman's car.

I have decided that I don’t want to try and build the loco on this time frame with me not feeling good. I want it highly detailed and I just don’t have it in me. So the crane wins. It will be a small steam crane with a semi-open cab, double drum steam winch, Taylor Tin roofing, be a wood burner, and use logs for the boom. I have planes from Garden Railways Magazine along with a build log over at My Large Scale to build pretty much exactly what I am after. I am hoping/thinking I can do this build with little to no expense.

Here is my highly engineered blueprint from which I will be working.

I think this maybe the first time I used an actual napkin. As usual I am very enthusiastic and couldn’t stop thinking about it. Now I have to wait ten days before I can actually start.

That will be a cool project, Devon. I really like the foreman’s car you built. We are thinking alike this year as I am considering building a MOW work caboose and maybe a flat car to go with it. I am also considering a loggers cabin(s) to go with the cookhouse I built last year. Decisions, decisions. I look forward to following along with your build and I hope you can get some relief soon and feel much better.

Great idea Devon. I built my RR with a similar crane car built from my parts box except it was diesel powered. Have fun with it.

So I have been pouring through the catalogs the Cliff Jennings posted in the reference section for ideas on the crane and especially the winch; looking at details to add to the basic design. I came across this as an “auxiliary use” for the crane.

A pile driver attachment. I just might have to throw that in.

K.I.S.S… Devon Just build the main unit first …you do not have a year to build it…

The Pile Driver attachment would be the very last thing I would build for it. But Its a rather simple addition to the crane itself. Couple beams and a weight is basically all it is. But you are right first the crane.

With our luck, you’ll spool the cable into a birds nest on the first drop!

Cool! Following with interest…

These are kinda big files, but loaded with cool information, including MOW stuff.

Hope there is some stuff to help your build.

Thanks Bob,

I’ll need to poke through that stuff.

I promised myself to build AND finish a Barnhart loader.

Got the Gazette plan… got the materials…Need the will and the get up and go! (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

You better find the get up and go…your LSC cousins here may mostly be all the way across the ocean, but we’re very capable of hounding you Englishmen!

Does the loader look something like this (from the Clinton County Historical Museum)?

edit: it’s the Society, not the Museum… https://www.clintonpahistory.org/

Hi John…Yep looks the same.

This log loader was bashed out of a USA crane by one of my “other” friends. Nice idea for an open cab.

Don’t have a clue as to what happened, the http is there at the top right next to the blue rectangle with the upper right hand corner cut off, I’ll try to do better next time, Bill

I’m guessing when you edited you added the pics from the Wrong Side…

I eliminated all the useless code in the quote above. I think that is how you intended it to be posted? (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
