Large Scale Central

Dave T. 2021 Mik Build

Dave, I have a small question, I’m guessing because of your tight curves it’s obvious , but on the “jeeps“ does each truck swivel on its own? do you think on a right hand curve that the left side will be to the right of the right side rail? That would look awesome, I have seen heavy haul trucks make corners like that where the middle is completely off the road. I hate to see the damage on the jeep, I’m sure it will rise from the wreckage

@Pete… Yes, each of the two trucks under the jeep swivel just like a regular flat car… And the center drop car ends swivel on each jeep. Thats what technically makes it a Schnibel Car.

BTW: In a week or so, I’m snowbirding down to the Tucson ( actually Catalina area ) for a break from the cold… Maybe passing thru we could get it some running time?

Lol Dave where exactly do you live in New Mexico? Living in N Idaho it seems to me that new Mexico is the same as Arizona. But I also know that there are places in NM that are higher than most if idaho like Angle Fire

Devon et al: I live in Farmington NM., Wheres that? Way up in the North West corner of the State. Just down the road a bit from the Four Corners, where NM, AZ, UT, CO all meet, I’m about 20 miles from the CO border. It’s about 45 miles South of the world famous “Durango” and the D&S, and 100 miles West of Chama and home of the C&TSRR.

The area is “High Desert”, and we’re at about 6000 ft elevation, right at the base of the Southern Rockies, and I can look North and see the Snow capped mountains ( and what was the RGS grounds). Right now it’s down to 34 deg from todays high of 41, and the snow from 3 days ago is still on the ground. Tonight it will be a low of 25. And this Sunday they are calling for 50% chance of more Snow…

The region is driven by Oil and Gas ( the end of the line for the D&RGW pipe trains in the 50-60s), and we have two HUGE Coal Fired power plants zapping out electrons all over the Western states. We have Three Rivers that combine in town, coming down from the Rockies, that join up to the Colorado and on to SoCal so they can wash their cars ( but we get the world class fly fishing first). We are surrounded by Native reservations ( Navajo, Southern Ute, Apache). And our airport is nicknamed “USS Farmington” for setting on a bute with 150’ vertical drop off on each end, they say its a lot like a carrier landing…

2 "ifs, if I am home and if the weather cooperates I would welcome you to my humble little RR. In the Catalina area there are a couple of really nice RRs I have seen from the Tucson Garden Railway Society, tuscongrs.org

OH NOOO The Humanity over that crashed bogie. I like your attitude that it can all be repaired and I agree the bent brake wheel provides character.

Thanks Dave for the description of where you live. I knew I had an unrealistic idea of what NM was like. While I think desert i also know it has high elevations, snow, mountains, rivers, and elk

Spent last night and this morning, re-engineering my Talgo trucks. I think I have come up with a much better combination. I shortened the protruding knuckle by just about 1 inch. Made a huge difference in the look. Now will it make it around my pike… don’t know, but it does look a lot better.

Top : standard length. Bottom New shortened length.

There is a couple of clearance issues, but I’ll figure them out… Add a couple of screws, through some paint on them and move on…

Dave T.

Hell yeah…back on track.

The modified knuckle looks much better.

That looks way better. I do hope it makes it around the curves. Function before form. But it does look much better.

Spent yesterday on building 4 new trucks, two with the shortened Talgo’s and two standard. Also got the damage repaired, except for the bent brake wheel, which I’ll leave as a reminder of the accident.

Got the paint detailing finished on the two jeeps, and started on the center drop section.

Today some more paint detailing on the center part.

Stay tuned…

Dave T.

Ta-Daaaa… it’s detailed and done…

Even had a few to play with the load of some sort… Suggestions?

Still have to find a stain/wash to cover the wood … and then letter and number the cars…

Dave T.

Ok , the car will win awards, but will some cans taped to a award winner win the MIK challenge? Lest hope Dave’s fertile mind can do the car justice. I think maybe some Kind of pressure vessel will give you the best looking load for the car, or an giant spam can for a power plant type if load. Good luck figuring this all out!

That thing is just way awesome

Great recovery, Dave. Think: spent nuclear fuel (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

EDIT: to say, yes, I know its the wrong time period, but so is the car (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)So think about some waste product that must not spill and is carried in a very heavy container.

fwiw: this is a decommissioned reactor:

And this is some radioactive waste in Virginia:

A “refinery vessel”

Giant cable load:

Not sure what this is:

Concrete pipe load:

I’ll stop now…

How about a locomotive of a different gauge?

Needs to be a can whatever it is

I’ve only got 4 more days till I leave on vacation ( snowbirding). So I came up with a plan…

In my searching for “Heavy Loads” ( BTW: DO NOT do a Google search for heavy loads… ) ( I warned you)… I came up with an image of a 1915 GE Rubealattor, For heavy hydro usage. Fits the bill just perfect. Already drew blood on sharp edges…
