Track is done with exception of some weathering details… For the guys that hand lay track and think that I have mental issues modeling Amtrak perhaps you need to re-calculate and ask yourself the same question?
1hr/ft is way too time consuming for me but I had to do it since I re-gauged to 63.5mm (scale freaks) in order for it to look right by my eye. Friar Fred ,Padre, Father Fred…YES there is lack of overhead “poles” to make it correct however it’s headed somewhere that will hopefully educate and promote the hobby so there is no need for them because one “pole” says it’s not correct without them.
It’s all plastic or composite material with exception of the rail. Needed to go that way because of the museums controlled environment and have had past issues with wood bowing there. Nothing is fastened down and it all floats but is secured.

Hmm, I wouldn’t have expected that wood bowing thing in a controlled environment; thought it was un-controlled environments which caused that.
The lack of humidity in a museum would pull all the moisture out of the wood, making it do all sorts of non wood like bends and twists
I find this interesting. Every piece of wood or wood framed furniture in your home is manufactured in a factory with no environmental controls. If the environmental control is the issue, then why does your furniture not twist up like a pretzel in your environmentally controlled home?
Just something to think about…
I can’t answer that Bob, but why does every 2x4 I buy at Lowes or Home Depot turn into a pretzel if not nailed to something right away, while 2x4’s I bought at a lumber yard 10 years ago are still straight and true?
Wood is rarely Kiln Dried at the Saw Mill any more. Done properly in big racks it came out straight and true and ready to go.
When you go to the big box store you expect cheap, it’s what you get.
Lumber yards used to pay the difference, but found it hard to compete.
So now you get what you wouldn’t pay for back then.

John, I think there is another factor that most folks miss. The lumber we purchase today is second, third…who knows how may generations. Second, most of the lumber we purchase today is genetically altered for fast growth to keep up with the demand we put on the suppliers. Look at the grain thickness between old growth lumber (if you can find any) and the growth rings in modern timber. The newer stuff has larger growth rings, meaning larger water spaces in the wood. As the wood dries or dampens (shrinks and swells) it is going to change dimension. Larger growth rings, larger changes.

Had no time for real pics this weekend so cellphone shop pics are gonna have to do. I will put a wood trim around the base (probably walnut as I have it on hand ) however my modeling is gonna go stagnant as the boys baseball season is starting. Will probably bring to York on Friday but not for the D&B…(have fun guys)
Ghetto building 101 and it’s for educational purposes once again…now back to Amtrak and modern day mainline trash !
I see tons of mistakes but it will serve it’s purpose !

Great job . The car came out real nice . I really like the realistic track and ballast you did. The hand laid light rail and beat up weathered ties sure look real.
