Craig's MIK build

And I wanted to be #100

Well maybe I might get it done after all…

Got half the roof glued on now

And figured I might as well mock it up outside.

Looks even better on the RR, Craig.

What is this word “measured” of which you speak? Seriously, I love your work. I will always lack the patience, even if someday I acquire a quarter of your skill!

Eric

It makes me want to build my big feed mill now! I knew starting a building project was going to be dangerous to the layout building progress. But it’s a nice break from building track. I was getting a bit tired of spiking track there for a while. So this is a nice distraction and motivation to keep building track and get the layout running. Hard to have ops without track. Buildings can always wait.

Eric,
It’s been slow slow learning curve. I’m now where near the level some of you guys think I’m in. I just do a good job of not showing/sharing my mistakes.

Oops nevermind, I do make mistakes and share them.

The funny thing Eric, just a few nights ago I was watching Adam Savage on YouTube talk about measurements… He was talking about learning to measure and machine to nanometers…

3.937 × 10-8 inch

There are 3.9370078740157E-8 inches in a nanometer

And I thought I was good being able to “see” a .020"-.010" difference…

But give me a tape measure and ask to cut a board at 6’ 1/8" and I’ll be off by 1/16"… Makes a ton of sense, right?

Craig are you making the track1/29 scale, so a few 32nd’s wider than the 45mm g scale track?

No Pete. I gave up on that idea a while back. It’s the “wrong” gauge. But it’s always in the back of my mind if I ever run out of projects.

Nah the real reason was I would love to eventually own a live steam Shay. And there’s now way I’m regauging something like that for 1/16".

But the building… well I see your point! What’s a 16ths among friends that will never notice the difference… come to the Dark Side, young Padawan! We have cookies and we need a pastry chef!!

I agree. I was impressed before but seeing it out on the layout and it will be very cool indeed.

Another problem with prototype gauge is then you are the only one that can run on it. No having people over for Ops unless they run your equipment. While it would be nice to do it isn’t all that practical.

I got the other half of the roof glued on last night and did some trim work to fill in some gaps. It’s looking really good now. A few more final trim pieces around the corners, and regluing the battens and the big stuff is done.

Now it just comes down to making all the roof brackets, the loading dock, ladder, etc and figuring out the roofing material. I think I’ll swing by Lowes and see if I can find that non skid tape today. I might actually make the 30 day cut off for once? Not holding my breath at the moment.

Well I went and bought some antiskid tape at Lowes while looking around for MEK. Still can’t find any locally yet (SW had it in 5 gallons).

This anti skid tape looks and feels pretty close to the sandpaper that I used for my other building. Now I’ve got to figure out if I want to notch out tabs or call it good as a solid piece. Some experiments are in order.

Roof might be closer than I think to being done.

Ok…now were playing with dollies!

If a Rooster endorsement means anything( I’m endorsing it) platform or not. You are learning to get beyond talk and anal retention!

Nice work and following along but forget the spot putty and just finish and paint.

No platform but there will be a wooden outline of a former concrete platform.

Planting on the layout is probably going to come way after the MIK build is over. I’ve got a few things I have to fix on the layout before I can plant buildings permanently.

It’s a little course compared to the sandpaper I used on my other building but hopefully it will last longer out in the elements.

I’ll definitely be breaking the $30 limit as one punch of 96" only covers so far. I think I’ll cut it into 1’ wide strips and apply. Not sure if I want to try and cut individual shingle marks yet. When I did it before I used the table saw blade kerf as the shingle spacing. It looked nice but I think this stuff is slightly thicker and it won’t show up as well. Hopefully it will hold without adding any additional glue.

Craig,
Just an FYI.
Rolled roofing also known as mineral felt comes in a 39 inch wide roll, when applied it is set 36 inches to the weather with a 3 inch lap. Knowing your penchent for prototypical detail I just wanted to give you something more to worry over :grinning:

But isn’t felt used underneath the shingles?:roll_eyes:

I helped my father in law reroof his house a few years back. It wasn’t hard per say just a lot of labor for 3 guys working in the evening after work.
