Craig's MIK build

Well this stuff isn’t PVC then because I’ve glued it together with MEK and the MEK seems to be holding the parts. So maybe it’s ABS afterall?

I’ve tried MEK pvc boards and had zero results. Now I have no idea if there are different types of PVC. but the only thing I have gotten to weld PVC is PVC cement. MEK didn’t melt it like I hoped it would. I have not worked with ABS so I have no idea what MEK does to it.

Forgive me if I am stating the obvious. . . But MEK and MEK substitute are not the same animal when it comes to welding plastic. I used to buy pure MEK by the pint at ACE for thinning epoxy paint. But some asshat decided it caused cancer only in California so it has been restricted. They now sell a MEK substitute that thins epoxy paint but it does not melt styrene. I have a pint of it if anyone wants it. I need to see what it does for cleaning 3d resin parts. Because so far in have found the “substitute” to be worthless

This is good old fashioned MEK. I’m almost out actually of the quart and have been looking around for replacement. Found a marine hardware store in Bremerton that says online that they have some. But the local hardware store and Lowes don’t have any.

The glue up has begun…

As I’m gluing, I’m adding internal bracing as this .060 is just a tad thin for self support and I figured the roof needs additional bracing as well. The stand offs are 3" high so I figured I can throw a hunk of something underneath as well.

Looking good Craig, maybe a glue like E6000 will work if things keep not sticking!

Wow craig that’s coming out great.

We’ll see how it looks once the lid is glued on.

I’m already regretting some design features that I could have easily changed but oh well.

No shown is the whole entire backside that needs its battens reglued!

Craig, that’s turned out to be a fine looking building. And big :grinning:

I like your depot and the idea of it being boarded up is rather prototypical for older barely making it RR’s.

I used a piece of plastic trim for the base of my building but it wasn’t wide enough so I glued, tightbond3, and nailed to strips onto the sides to make it work.

Will your depot be used by the RR or has it been left to rot? If left it would be really neat to scorch a corner of it like some vandals tried to burn it down. I have an open sided depot like that on my RR.

Looking awesome Craig!

Cliff

PS, fwiw, the cement I sent you the link on has a blend of solvents (“dissolvers”) for PVC, styrene and ABS. Not that it helps you at this point. But soldier on, Dude!

Todd,
The depot was in active service until the BN was formed after 1 year of the BN, the closed the depot and then a year later it was torn down. I actually got a scan from April 1970 of a station report. Basically it shows expenses and revenue a d carloads. Some interesting information, and give me an idea of carloads as the Redmond station agent processed about 200 cars a year. For a trip weekly run, that’s a decent number for cars per trip.

Dan
It seems small to me at only 1’ x 3’. My feed mill that I have to start over on is 6’x7’ x 4’. That’s a building. And the Darigold plant in Issaquah is something like 200 x 200 scale as well…

But this project is helping me determine that for me feed mill or any large building it needs to have a shell of 1/2" plastic. The 1/2" plastic should be self supporting vs this light stuff. When I get around to it, I’ll have to take a trip down to my local plastic supply house and spend some money on 1/2" thick stock of whatever they can sell me for cheap. :joy:

Cliff,
I’ve been meaning to have some Weld On products on hand anyway so this might be the good excuse to finally get some.

Craig

Well apparently I can’t math… 48+31=79 and 48 +13+18= 79 according to the drawing but somehow those measurements are translated to the model some how. Or I made a mistake somewhere else in a door width or something.

I’m about a 1’ short on the back wall somehow. Oh well. I’ll glue and patch a small extension and get it all fixed and no one will be the wiser… well except you all.

Okay it’s only 6" so that makes me feel a little better.

Oh and I’m realizing that I’m going to need to sand/trim the top edge of the walls to match the roof slope at 30°. That should be fun

Craig i have decided this is why I really like you. We are so vastly different in our modeling techniques. You are so dang precise. I admire it i really do. I just jam stuff in and you have it engineered to perfection. I really admire the attention to detail.

Devon,
I’m sure I would model differently if I wasn’t sure a die hard prototype modeler. But come on 6" of a gap is not something you can just slap some Bondo on and call it good!

I think I discovered my extra 6"… It’s on the short wall with the man door and 2 windows. Measured it out to 18’ 6". I must have forgot to trim the last 6" or so off after I added the door ( and that makes total sense now as I think about it. The door frame was made up of .030 strips, so that’s about 3" on either side).

Dang it. It’s too glued up to go back and trim 3"boff both ends so I guess I’ll be making a 6" wall patch.

Oh and Devon,
I suck at woodworking. No seriously I can build great things with plastic down to a thousands of an inch but ask me to build something out if 2x4 and plywood and it will look like crap. My attempt to raise my workbench to the level of my mini table saw worked but the drawers and the drawer covers look like crap.

If I ever built an interior layout, I’d buy something prebuilt like IKEA shelves or something. Yes it’s that bad.

Guess I need more practice playing with wood?!

And baking falls under the “I can make it taste good” but looks like crap category as well.

I joke with my wife that between her “make things pretty, but takes forever” and mine "make it taste good’ we could make a decent baking couple if we could stand each other in the kitchen.

Some people live by the 10’ rule, ( me) and some people live by the microscope isn’t as exact as I would like , but it will have to do, rule (Craig)!
I admire your detail eye, but I just can’t try it myself
