And your battens look great Craig!
I’d rather blow the budget and finish…
Building base ideas? Obviously the sides and core are ABS/styrene.
The base is going to be about 11" wide and 33" or so.
Option 1. Glue everything to a piece of 1/8" styrene.
Option 2. Cedar fencing?
Option 3 PVC boards but I can only get 1x ? at the store.
Option 4 Pressure Treated lumber?
Well more than likely the Cedar boards and the PT lumber are going to be wet and when they dry will change the look of your building, try to find some dry wood to use.
That’s why I was thinking plastic of some kind might be the best. I guess I could screw a a couple sections of PVC trim together and glue the styrene shell to the outside of the boards. And that would give it weight/strength.
Use the pieces I’ve made so far as a “facade” type covering over the PVC board. If you can glue styrene to PVC.
Styrene to PVC works fine with welder type adhesives like MEK or Weldon 3 or Weldon 16.
How big a base do you need? I have lots of sheet PVC in my scrap bin and willing to donate to your cause if it will fit in a medium flat rate box
The building base is ~11" x 35". So call it 1x3.
I could come up with that size, but it’s too big for flat rate, so shipping might be expensive. It probably wouldn’t weigh more than a few pounds.
Thanks for the offer Jon, but I think I’ll pass.
I know I’ve got some 1/8" styrene available to use as a base. And I might have a hunk of thicker acrylic. Not sure.
Forward progress hit a 48-72+ hour snag… We all got sick starting with my oldest kid and eventually working it’s way down the line to me.
I hit my 48 hours of being sick this morning and am slowly recovering. Instead of spending the morning playing trains, I was trying to troubleshoot a washing machine that’s not spinning clothes very well. Never did figure out the issue either but will order some common failure parts.
Good/bad news we are all now stuck in quarantine for the next 5 days. School was already cancelled for Tuesday but now I get 3 more days of sick leave to take.
But on the MIK build front, I’ve now successful glued two wall sections together. The building seems a lot smaller than I thought but was going to be. But maybe my frame of reference is all screwed up due to my large feed mill.
Before I got sick, I was actually able to get some progress on mounting this bridge onto the layout. I’ve got one end about 90% of the way in palace now a d
once I get that done will work on rebuilding the other side. Lesson learned, build a bridge before you build a layout or at least build it linearly instead of going back and fixing stuff.
PS this was the bridge Devon mentioned earlier.
get well my friend. The bridge looks awesome
Since I’ve got nothing better to do than lay on the couch…
Here’s a couple quick snaps of the building progress as it stands.
This wall was a mystery wall until I was shared a blurry, grainy photo. I could pick out that there was 4 window frames and did a guessing game of where the windows would be.
Same side of the wall, with the freight door. For this door, I based it off the principal that the location would be the same as the side facing the tracks.
Overall view. The 4 window wall jumps out 4’ from the other wall. I have yet to build that short 4’ wall.
Thanks Devon,
The worse part of being sick and now being stuck is I have to make sub plans. I have a feeling the district is likely going to close Wed-Fri as we closed Friday and Tuesday due to a lot of staff and students out. I had on average 50% of my kids gone last week.
Oh and here’s the bridge in it’s ugly place. I’ve got a lot of work ahead on both bridge approaches to make them more appealing to the eye. I’m not looking forward to filling in the spaces between the bents with hardware cloth, etc for eventual dirt.
Nice pictures and enjoying the progress. Where is the depot going ? Under the trestle or did I miss that ?
It goes were it says “depot”
This whole phase of benchwork is done with most of the track in place. I’m just going back and adding in the trestle and fixing a few mistakes.
Where does the trestle fit into the overall scheme ?
Rooster,
The trestle is outlined with the >< on the track plan by the house. It’s upsidedown so it might be hard to read but it says “Sammamish River Slough crossing”
Maybe I’ll get motivated tonight and post a build log on the bridge. I have all the photos and info just never shared it with this group.
Craig, this building will look nice on your new layout. Can’t wait to see it in its final location.
I finally got back to this project this evening and built out one more short wall ( the bay window).
I took a second look at the doors I made and I don’t know like them and I have no clue what the man doors looked liked either. So I’m tossing this out to the group…
Ideas/pictures of station doors. Windowless. Not fancy but not a sheet of plywood!
I wouldn’t think that they would have covered the doors with plywood like they did the windows? Or would they? That would certainly solve my door problem!
