They say that you can judge the efficiency of roof insulation by observing snow melt. This was taken 24 hours after our second measurable snowfall…

That big dark spot is directly above the uninsulated attic hatch door! I definitely need to attach some foam to those doors!

Closing in on the last of the finish work. Yesterday I completed priming and painting the last four ceiling panels, two of which are only 15" wide…

I still have not selected any millwork for trim which I want to do soon. We are running to the city today for french toast components and supplies before the big snow arrives late Saturday. Perhaps I can come home with some! If I do, I think I can wrap up the structure this weekend.

Been following along since the beginning Jon, have to say what a great effort. Will be a fantastic workshop when she’s all done.

Cheers
N

Thanks Neil. I’ve been following your build as well.

This will be a workshop, man cave and indoor switching layout. And maybe some day, another escape to the outdoors!

Yesterday we went by Home Depot. I picked up 96 feet of pre-stained 1x4x8’ barnwood for $3 each. I’ll rip that in half for “crown” trim. I also grabbed enough primed casing for the door and windows.

Today I hung the last 4 panels. The skinny ones required cutting open the insulation and adding some blocking as the last full width sheet landed on all but .125" of the joist…

Tomorrow I’ll probably be digging. 12-18" predicted.

We are getting snow, but not the fluffy stuff predicted. It started out that way but turned wet and granular at mid day. My across the street neighbor has a plow on his side-by-side and plows out all he neighbors.

I dug a path to the shop and cleaned it several times. After an hour or so moving stuff yet again to dig out the brads for my brad nailer I did manage to get the door and window casing installed before the football game and a generous helping of French Toast for lunch!

Perhaps, but my OCD has a problem with my less than perfect cut outs and seams. If I decide to paint it all, then you would be right!

Toward that end I finished the widows today after digging the cars out.

And I couldn’t stop there, so I ripped a few of the 1x4’s in half and hung about 20 feet to see how it will look. So far, not bad!

The net cost of the grey trim is less than $0.18 per foot! And I way over bought casing so I have 5 lengths to go back putting over $60 back in the budget :upside_down_face:

The gray ceiling trim looks great Jon.

So, the obvious question for me is, will you paint or stain the plywood?

Either way you need to pick your flooring soon for color coordination.:grin:

Thanks Cliff.

I think the plywood will stay natural. Perhaps the windows will get primed, but probably not color.

I don’t plan to do the entire floor. Once benches are decided I’ll probably do sheet goods in the center and under any non built-in stuff. I have a large chunk of beige carpet, with plenty of stains, that will go in the corner with the knotty pine boards. That will be where the hobby work bench and computer will live - hopefully soon! I need to stop making sawdust first.

Jon, all great, but I have two words: “We’ll see.” :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I think I can now say, until spring when I can work on the exterior, the structure work is done. The last of the ceiling trim went up today…

Now I need to figure out the first of the benches and start building that. I think I’ll start with a work bench on the East wall.

Are you going to install wheels on them so when you have to move them it will be easier

No. Everything will be a built-in. Most will have storage below and eventually track on top.

I am debating a solid plywood top like my CT railroad, OR doing roadbed on slat supports. I just had a passing thought of using real plants in containers and augmenting the light with grow lights. Neighbors will think I built a grow house, so no to that idea!

I will probably just go with flat plywood base like CT. That gives me maximum flexibility to change track layout as desired.
