Large Scale Central

Brrrrrrrrrrrr

The snow just keeps getting deeper and deeper. Its been over a month since I last saw the grass. The KMRR is closed until the ice on the tracks can melt away from the rails. The line will be shovled to help the process.

If it was not for the fire tower I wouldnt be able to find the layout

Shawn nice pictures but I would have to say that looks like it sucks for running trains.

Same here, except I'm not shoveling; just waiting for thaw. Today is the coldest temps we have had in 5 years. Below zero F last night and about 14F right now. I'm not going to be spending much time outside.

Yesterday I spent an hour digging a path through the snow drifts so I can get an oil delivery. I’m thinking the propane fireplace in the basement get’s lit today.

Jon -10 this morning. My wood stove has been almost non stop since begining of dec. Tonight suppose to be even colder.
Geof its actually fun running the trains in the snow. Running trains, snowshoeing and cross country skiing, Its the only way to survive this weather. As long as you keep moving its not bad. Yesterday went snowshoeing and temps was 9 degrees and I was hot wearing a long sleeve with a light fleece jacket.

Our forecast for 4 to 6 inches over today and tonight on top of 10 we have has gone way down. I’m kind of disappointed; if it’s going to be below freezing for 2+ weeks straight we’d better damn well have something which makes it worth it.

Shawn from the way the pictures look you have to snowshoe and ski just to get to the trains. :)

Last fall the weather man predicted a colder and wetter winter than normal. Well we had some cold in November and about 6" of snow in late December. Since then it has been about freezing or a little below at night and up into the 50’s in the day. Needless to say we don’t have snow on the ground. It all went after Christmas. If we can make it through another 3-4 weeks like this our winter will be done. Fingers crossed.

It’s going down to -24F tonight here Ottawa…a bright crisp night here…great for hibernating…

Another cold one again below zero and possible strom on the way for wed. As soon as the sun comes up going out on my snowshoes. Ya I know im crazy. LOL

Shawn - we got your -10 this morning. My car was not happy at 6AM trying to get moving. Forecast for rain/snow mix on Wednesday. I’d much rather have all snow.

Fred - keep that wood stove cranked and the Malt bottle close by  -24 is way too cold for me.

I survived my 3 miles of snowshoeing. Its cold still below zero. You can hear the trees making poping noises from the sap freezing. The lakes have a really cool echo noise as the ice shifts and cracks. Weird sound. Now im enjoying some hot coffee by my wood stove.
Jon looks like Im going to be all snow for this one. Seems west of the city is suppose to see snow

It was -8 at 4am… The dog said his pee froze into an upside down icicle and jabbed him in the belly, and wants to know when we moved to Nebraska!

I woke again yesterday to about an inch of new snow but the temp hit 30 degrees (heat wave) Today more snow on the way 6-10 inches. I really want to get my trains running outside.

Same here, except we ended up with about 3-4" as the band stalled over Western CT. This morning driving in it was 19 degrees. I must be getting used to this, I wasn’t cold  We have 6-12 coming late today. I’ve mentioned before that a lot of my railroad is directly under the drip line of the house roof. I have sections now encased in 6 inches of ice. No way I’m running any more winter trains. In fact, the snow piles in my yard are so high I think they might still be there into May :frowning: I kind if like the idea of running the snow plow in 50 degree weather though  Got some of that in '09…

I’m tired of winter. I went out at 6:20 this morning to dig out and go to work. Just finished at nearly 8:00. We only got about 8-9 inches, but it’s heavy wet snow. We live at the end of a cul-de-sac and the plow jockey decided to push all the snow in front of my driveway. Biggest problem is that the snowbanks are well over my head and it’s a real chore to heave wet snow 7 feet in the air.

Bruce - You can have this back.

They mis-called this storm in the other direction this time. All day yesterday they kept lowering the snow counts. “Snow ending by 4am, 3-5 inches” in my area. Woke up this morning at 6 to heavy snowfall, and a foot more on the ground. Snowbanks at the end of the driveway are approaching 7 feet. I have to move the snow twice, once to the middle of the driveway, and next into the yard. We have to snowshoe around the yard to make paths for the dogs. And I used to have a railroad, I swear I did. Which one of you guys stole it?

Oh no, John :frowning:

LOL. This is getting really old. I have no place to put snow. My driveway is just wide enough to fit my jeep through and no other place to put snow. My walkway is shoulder high with snow on the sides. It just keeps getting deeper and deeper. Plus we have not gone above freezing in something like 2 months. If it was not for my fire tower I would never see my layout expect for the deep cuts on the main line from shoveling it out.

From the man that looks forward to snow so he can run trains and snowshoe cross country :D :D ;)

Not that much snow - only about 8"…but power just came back on. Went off last night about 10:30.
