Bob's Mik 2024 - The Fence Offensive

Moving on to the rail gate. It will be two 7’ wide gates, for a total of 14 feet wide. I’m making them out of brass tube and bar. The angle support has the ends flattened, and will be curved to match the post, then everything will be soldered together.

All I see is a pathway to M.A.D.N.E.S.S…:crazy_face::crazy_face::crazy_face:

Wow , if this is “operational quality, is anything else to u do less than museum quality? That is awesome

May be the most realistic model fence I’ve seen, Bob. Well done. I like the brass for the gate., should last a lifetime

Very cool Bob. When was chain link invented. I all of a sudden want some 1890s chain link and razor wire.

According to Wikipedia, developed in 1844 by a cloth company. 1890’s manufacture in Massachusetts got a patent on a process to to make continuous sheets. 1930 another patent to make it cheap enough for residential use.

One gate complete, less the diagonal support.

Just fantastic Bob. It really is. A humble fence but it is turning out to be one of my favorites this year.

Will these track gates be functional? We have an industry on the local short-line with a fenced and gated unloading area. Train crews need to unlock and open the gates to switch, then close them up and lock when done. Will add some operational interest at Goodson’s.

That’s actually an interesting concept. So not only does switching occur but you have to open and close gates. That something I would have never thought of.

Yep, they will swing. Like you said, a good extra operational item. “Gates should be closed except when moving cars” or something.

Gorgeous work Dude! I was a little worried when you were thinking about weaving your own! Although that machinery is so cool… :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

This mesh you found looks perfect, and your post & rail approach seems elegant and effective. Awesome job!

You better make them really durable then , something that can handle hand and possible couples opening one closing them !!!

Yea, one thing I’ve learned from having TrainOps here, is that people will just MOVE THINGS and not actually look what needs to be done to not break it. I had several prototype switch stands, including a 3-way, just twisted off because people would just grab the switch stand and turn it, instead of using it prototypically. Ah well.

These, I think, will be held “closed” with some magnets and swing in either direction to avoid problems.

I love the concertina wire. It makes me think of zombies trying to get to the guy in the battery place, and leaving body parts on the wire…

Don’t know why such ideas come unbidden to my mind, but I thought I’d share.

MADNESS I say …mAdNeSs !!!

Watch him Vic! Next he’ll be trying a Pizza instead of out in the garden. :innocent: :sunglasses:

One gate complete-ish. Swings both in and out. Simple tube and pin hinge.

perfect. Exactly how my 1:1 gate works. The good old half barrel hinge.

Signs look about the right size.
