Large Scale Central

Another Ventilated Boxcar

Mike Oates is a frequent operator at the J&B RR. He indicated that he would like to have a ventilated boxcar for his own layout, so I decided to build yet another. I have a few AMS flatcars that I bought at a special sales price last year. Wish I had bought more! I will use this as a base for this car, along with some Ozark Miniatures siding. They also have some printable fruit crates, but they only come 4 to a sheet of paper. I decided to make my own. A quick Google search yielded some great labels and I put together a sheet of them, along with a sheet of crates - 8 to a page.

I cut the ends to fit, along with some vent openings, along with slots for the couplers.

The sides were laid out and I drilled some holes to help make the cuts.

The little MicroLux scrollsaw does a great job of cutting the openings.

I framed the openings with some 1/8" angle pieces, and added brass rod for the vents. I was able to save the coupler mounts from the flatcar by cutting them off of the end.

I glued the labels on some blocks of wood and put them in place in the car.

I printed some wood siding from Paper Creek Models and glued it in place on the inside, including the roof.

I made the top door slider from a couple of pieces of brass. Once again, I’m trying to create the impression of a Hutchins All-Steel roof, using some styrene and NBW.

Will you just STOP ALREADY. You’re making the rest of us look bad

I really like the interior paneling, was wondering how you got it to look so good when I read you printed it. Great idea.

Have you ever tried self-adhesive papers for this? Avery makes full sheet label stock - you can get it at Staples or Office Max.

Nice work! Good idea on the interior paneling, and the crates look terrific!

It’s funny. I’ve got a bunch of the self-adhesive paper, but I never even thought about it for this - I’ve been using it for signs. Of course, I do have this big can of the 3M adhesive…

I’ll try that for the back of the doors…

Nice work Bruce.

Where did you get the printable panel for inside the car? I cant seem to find it…

Thanks, guys. Bob, try this:

OH, its in the outhouse plan. Got it.

AND…where did you get the labels?

Very nice work Bruce, a great inspiration for many of us.

I’m feeling like Jon. Bruce your stuff just knocks me out. This one is another masterpiece.

I’m going to do a Scratch building clinic at the 2010 Convention and I am going to add some thing on this to the presentation as I have built up house cars in the same way. I just hope I can get as good of pictures.

Cool! I just picked up an Accucraft refrigerator car from Caboose to turn into “something.” (Hey, it was $55, and I had some birthday money.) It’s not going to be a refrigerator car when I’m done with it… I’m gonna have to remember that paper trick.

Later,

K

Those need to go in the reefer!

On another note, I’d recommend getting rid of the tabs and just gluing it around a block of wood. But that’s just me…
