Another Ventilated Boxcar

I’ve been remiss. Here are my crates; not as fancy as Bob’s. No tabs. Cut out and clue around a block of wood. Labels from the other sheet. I cheated, no bottoms.

When I cut these out, I make a very light cut along the bend lines. This makes for an easy fold.

I decided to use ladders instead of individual grab irons. For one thing, they’re a lot cheaper than buying ready made grab irons, and I already have everything I need to build them. I used some .100" x .125" styrene strips, and some 1mm brass rod that I picked up from McMaster-Carr. I order 40 at a time. Thought I had enough but had to order another box; but with them it’s only a day or two before the order shows up.

Ladders in place as well as some of the end detail. The coupler pockets were cut from the ends of the flatcar. I used their threaded rods and square nuts for the truss rods. There’s a lot of detail in those AMS cars.

Nice work Bruce. What is the purpose of the nut/bolt’s on the roof? Can’t figure out the way they are placed.

David, It’s my attempt at a Hutchins Steel Roof. I saw it in the 1924 Car Builders Cyclopedia and liked the look.

Thanks without the name I don’t think I’d a found that.

End detail about done. Made some roof walk supports from brass. Used some of the parts from the flatcar to finish it.

Next, I’ll tackle the doors.

Done and ready for interchange service.

Bruce,

I like the lettering and the weathering. Your skills just keep improving.

Nifty!

Very nice. I like the colors. What are you building next now that you are on a roll?

Very nice

Nice colors!

Well, you’ll certainly be able to find it during an operating session…

Just the thing for shipping ventilators out of the country

Bruce,
A very nice build. The double doors are cool.
On this type of car was there typically a way to close off the small vents?
