Amherst Large Scale Show 2023

Did Nico get thrown out before the show started?

AND how much information did Sean devolve to Cliff?

I had such a great time. So nice to finally meet folks in person that I have been conversing with online for years. The total paid attendance was 1080 and I think half of them wanted to talk to me about 3d printing! My voice is shot.

I hope 1080 was enough to convince the board to do it again next year. I know they were hoping for 1500-2000. I had a great time, and was good to meet you finally! You look nothing like your avatar.

I guess you had left by then Bob, But everyone cheered at the announcement. Also, at the banquet Friday night, John announced that they only had 375 on Friday but he believes a new show should be given 3 chances so they are doing 2 more years for sure. Next year will most likely be a Sat-Sun show.

I didn’t buy anything but I went to see people I hadn’t seen in a while. Looking forward to next year, hopefully the show continues to grow.

Another thing that was mentioned at the banquet is that there were vendors that wished to attend that couldn’t make it this year. This includes another large club layout that would necessitate a move to a larger building. :grinning:

I was at the show Friday and enjoyed it. It felt like there was a steady stream of people and plenty leaving with items. It was nice to casually walk around without bumping into the hordes like at the show in January.
I did find some deals on things I desperately needed  and others I did not. HA! I did misread a tag on a used GP30 at Nico’s table and thought it was $275 but later found out it was $225 after it had sold. Dang I should have put on my glasses! I ended up buying a new one at Charlie Ro’s . They didn’t have any unpainted ones so I went with a basic green in Pennsy. I plan on repainting it to the Cape Cod Central. I’d like to add sound to it. Does anyone have a sound card collecting dust…

The White Elephant table was great and I bought a couple of items from it.
It was funny. There was a tired old NH car with metal wheels for $10. I checked it out, put it down to pick up another and a guy grabbed it. I said hey I was going to buy that and he said, “it has the couplers that I use” ahhh okay…? I didn’t argue and bought the Railbox.

It was a good show. I do think the Sat/Sun time would be better for attendance but still large scale is a niche and being so close to the January show maybe guys can’t go to both? Maybe if the show does take off there will be fewer large scalers at the January show and they will wait for April? Time will tell.

Here is my Haul.

Dang - I Missed meeting you. I must have been off wandering and not near the LSC tables.

Next time!!

Yeah, I missed meeting Pat and Todd, dang!

My haul is still in the car… not sure what I got? Mostly scenery stuff (from Al Pomeroy at the white elephant and also a couple other vendors), a few small building / shack kits (from the '80’s, unopened), a car… also a few items for Jerry B.

A main happy point for me was selling all the stuff I brought to the white elephant, which paid for the all stuff I bought!

That white elephant area was expertly run, all financials taken care of by the expert staff – Stan & Deb Ames, Richard Beverly, Al Pomeroy and others. It was a great addition to the show!!

The Drag n Brag area (which included all the “Alcove” features) also made a big difference in the show I think. Folks visited, interacted with “braggers,” and worked the Timesaver. And (correct me if I’m wrong Bob) there was a non-LSC couple who very much participated. They were a lot of fun to talk to.

Danimal’s report from the banquette is very encouraging. Yes, the numbers weren’t as high as hoped, but IMO everything’s now a known benchmark that should only improve with increased promo, word of mouth, and opportunity to plan.

Oh, you bought my truck parts. Cool!

It was good to talk to David at Split Jaw, and ogle their curved bridges a bunch. I brought a section of Sunset Valley tie strips to see if it would fit in their bridges, and it does. Now to completely measure and lay out what I need and save my pennies. Probably need five sections, if my math is right. Geometry was a long time ago.

I’m sure you are referring to Fay Chin and his wife who he refers to as the CEO (Carries Everything Out). They displayed a neat operating (G scale) coal dumper. I’ve admired his N scale (T-Trak) modules featuring 3d printing and clever animation for many years now and happy he has recently joined me as a member of the NHGRS.

Todd that was funny I’m the one that sold those things to you and him
Richard

The dumper was neat. We need to get him on LSC!

Thank you Cliff we were from experts but we tried.
Richard

Good to see you too Sean. We had Ezie with us since we don’t have a dog sitter and I don’t think pets are allowed in. She dropped me at the door and she went shopping. LOL

Yes Bob I bought your trucks. Someday I hope to build some heavy duty cars and I will need those extra trucks.

The second photo of Bob’s says a lot.

  1. Yeah, the space allotted for the Drag and Brag was ENORMOUS.
  2. This was the first time a show has incorporated the Drag and Brag as a thing, and people came by!
  3. Us LSC folks did reasonably well populating the mile of tables presented for our use.
  4. A couple participated (the woman at the left, hub at far right), displaying their very-cool operating car dumper. There was a switch, and the kids loved making the car dump. So cool to have them join in with us!
  5. The young man at the lower left, supported by his dad, truly engaged the Timesaver puzzle; and we were all encouraged for that signal of fresh youthful connection to the hobby.

It was great interacting with you Richard, at the show and at that great steak dinner!

And you guys were GREAT at the white elephant, thanks so much!

" . . . .Maybe if the show does take off there will be fewer large scalers at the January show and they will wait for April? . . . ."

If I was unable to attend both, I would attend the LS show, of course :sunglasses:
