Large Scale Central

A Raised Road Bed: A build log for the RGS raised layout.

Fits pretty good. I’m really looking forward to seeing all this in person soon (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Looks pretty nice to me. I really like the sunshine on the layout. We’re expected to get another 4 to 6 inches of snow today. At this rate I won’t be working on my railroad until May or June. Funny thing is I’m scheduled to host our May club meeting.

This time last year, I was ballasting track after the winter. I still have a good foot of worn out snow and ice everywhere. I’m insanely jealous.

At least my well won’t suck dry in late August.

Looking for my door into summer.

The depot looks good Ken. Looks as if you planned for it to fit right there.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif) How wide is your benchwork in Porter?

Chuck & Steve: Sorry about all the snow. It has been 70 and sunny here the last few days. May get a shower or 2 this evening. But look on the bright side, it could be a lot worse … it could be me having to deal with the snow (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

Tell ya the truth, I couldn’t remember. I had to go out and measure it. 5 1/2’ wide. I had planned on some sort of station being there, just hadn’t figured I make it so elaborate.

That depot looks good there Ken, nice job on the construction.

Get a few snow shovels handed out and tell everyone the door prize is somewhere along the right of way(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

Me too Steve,

It snowed 2 inches Sunday morning the another 2 inches Monday morning but it rained it all off today while the wind was blowing.

Not sure which is better(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)

Very impressive!

Wow Ken that station turned out great. Looks like a perfect spot for it there.

Still needs a bunch of trim work done on it yet. Bottom trim, corner moldings, etc. and another coat of paint on the doors and windows.

Finished the platform, and after a visit to the ECLSTS, put it on the layout to try out a few things.

First off was how to run the track to the back of the depot. I decided to eliminate the switch to the siding at Mills, and run the track straight past the depot to a new switch cut into the wye. (yea, I know, WYE?)

This gives me 2 long sidings on both sides of Porter,

I have to remove all the dirt in that area anyway, to set the depot in and this will be a cleaner looking arrangement (I think).

Ya done good Ken.

I had the fellas (and gals) from the Gateway club stop by on their way back to Illinois and Missouri, and they helped with the decision, too. I can’t take all the credit, but thanks…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I’d leave that switch and add the other one to the new track. Then you could park a sleeper behind the depot and still have access the the tail of that track.

Looks good.

John

Well, John, that did enter into the discussion, and that may eventually happen, but I’d have to build another switch and the truth of the matter was I don’t feel like building another switch…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Thanks Ken and Bev for letting us drop by.

The layout looks great and is fitting in to the yard very nicely.

Really disappointed that we are not going to make the first “Formaaaaal” Ops.

Those that can go, should really make this a priority. It is going to be an EVENT!

Looks great Ken.

As for parking a sleeper and needing to access the tail; just adds a little more work to the job which in our world is a good thing (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

@Ric - Sorry to hear you won’t be able to make it to Ken’s. I hope you can make Bob’s. Don’t know if I can go two years without seeing you and Jan

But if you shuffle the sleeper, you had better hope that no one is sleeping in the sleeper at that particular time.

Hey Ken, the station looks great. How does the plastic roofing hold up outdoors? I’m thinking of trying it.

The darker gray stuff is Precision Products veneer and it holds up very well. It does get brittle, but it is brittle from the get-go. Most of the time it holds paint pretty good too, but there are times it chips off in spots, but that could be me or the paint. 3/4’s of the building out there have a Precision Products roof. The lighter colored porch roof is from Plastruct. I’ve used their stuff on buildings and it’s also held up well, but this is the first time using it on a roof. Personally, I like the Plastruct stuff better. It’s a lot less brittle and appears more realistic, detail wise, and comes in wider sheets. But it is more expensive.

On to the next phase of this never ending project…the backdrop.

This will be on the back wall of the shed mainly to hide the siding.

It’s mostly just the backs of buildings, with a loading dock here or there.
