Large Scale Central

A Raised Road Bed: A build log for the RGS raised layout.

Looking great Ken. Looking at the recent work the table seems to be out of level. It is just the angle the pic was taken?

It is a tad bit off level, but the wide angle photo distorts it and makes it look worse than it really is. I’m trying to keep it as close to ground level as I can.

Trackwork in Mancos is done:

And to finish off the afternoon:

Looks like a successful revenue run. Good to see the railroad making money again.

Watch that last step getting off the train (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

I pulled the 2 switches at either end of Mancos on Saturday when I was done to perform some long over due maintenance on them. I should get them both back in place sometime today. And there are a couple of other spots that need to be tweaked to get some smoother running over, and I’ll work on those today too.

I also added some more of the side sills:

That’s coming out great Ken. You work fast. You better hurry up, winter will be here before you know it.

Haven’t had a lot of time to work on it, between traveling to Canada and watching it rain. …(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Got a half a wheel barrow full of dirt yesterday and I was soaked by the time I was done. Not pleasant weather to work in.

Sign and loading dock temporarily in place (to see if everything fits)…

Nice.

Really nice work Ken.

BTW, pertaining to off level benchwork:

I had contemplated putting a section or two of benchwork at an angle and placing the track base on short risers set to hold level track as is done sometimes in the smaller indoor scales. Then perhaps with short shelf like runners to hold major scenery elements from sliding have a “track built into the side of a slope look”. I think concrete would work to hold scenery in place and with a bit of retaining wall/cribbing and maybe a short section of bridge or trestle across a gully or two it’d make a neat scenic attraction for a raised railroad.

Just an idea I never got around to trying like having trains fording beneath a real water stream as happened on a couple of actual logging lines. Very possible now with battery power although maybe a bit unnerving for those not used to operating in a bit of rain.

Anyway enough digressing. Heehee! Great job you’re doing Ken and I really enjoy the pix.

It’s not all that off-level now, and it’s about the same side-to-side as it is front-to-back.

I’m contemplating a lift-out bridge to connect this section with the next. I have 2 Truss bridges I salvaged from the old layout.

And luckily, I saved a roster of cars on paper so I can re-enter them on the JMRI software after my hard drive bit the dust.

You guy’s that always think ahead are amazing. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

If I’d been “thinking ahead” I’d have backed up the whole hard drive and not just some of it. As it is, I just have a bunch of tedious typing to do…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Spent some time yesterday on an operating session.

Got some dirt spread today.

And planted a ground cover.

That looks really nice filled in with the dirt, is there going to be any issues with the added weight?

I guess we shall see, Vinnie. But I don’t foresee any. I’ve had dirt up near the turntable for a few months and it didn’t cause any problems.

Wow!.. It’s alive! The dirt really completes it. I’d do all the dirt spreading before the typing, but that’s just me. Really looking good Ken.

Randy, some of us just have to share, so we type in mid project.

Oh my, Sorry David. I hope no one else took my statement that way. I was referring to all the typing he has to do to get his cars back in JMRI.

Lord knows I’d have no stones to throw since I currently have 3 unfinished threads on this site. Ken’s just keeps going, and getting better and going…

EDIT: to change '“2” to “3” and text color to red. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif)

I didn’t take it that way, but I do like to share what little progress I’ve made lately. I’d rather play in the dirt then type anyway…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

A further update with even more typing:
