2012 American Invasion

In two weeks we will be traveling north to “the Invasion”. Thought it was time to start a new thread to get this to the present. This is year is turning out to be many “Campaigns” on both sides of the border. Re-enforcements are beginning to muster from all corners. It is looking to be another eventful gathering. Reports and pictures to follow.
With record temperatures in the Midwest over the last couple of days and no relief in sight, it is time to think about getting on the road.

We’re really llloing forward to it. We havent been for, I think, four years? Really miss everybody and cant wait. Oh yea, we get to run some trains at some point, too.

Honey Brown? check
Passport? check
Ice Tea? check
Watermelon? check
Corn-on-the-cob? check

oh…Trains? check

We were all planned and ready to go, then life got in the way of the plans.

Have a great Time, All!

The 2012 American Invasion of Ottawa Schedule Thursday, July 19th to Monday, July 23rd Each year the Ottawa Valley Garden Railroad Society hosts the Annual American Invasion of Ottawa. We welcome guests to come and enjoy running trains on several outdoor railways in the National Capital Area. Over the years the event has grown from a weekend visit to a 5 day event. The only fee involved is $20 from each attendee to help offset the cost of food, condiments, and other purchases for the grilled meals. Tuesday, July 17th: Before the Invasion a small group of us are planning to meet in Gravenhurst, Ontario for a dinner cruise on Lake Muskoka aboard the Segwun, the oldest surviving steam powered ship in North America. http://ovgrs.editme.com/files/Invasion12p1/Segwun.bmp Gravenhurst is about 300 km (200 miles) west of Ottawa across the Algonquin and Haliburton Highlands. You are welcome to join us if it fits your plans. To view their web site, click on the following link: http://segwun.com/index.html To book, call 1-866-687-6667. Thursday, July 19th: In the afternoon Doug Matheson invites guests to run battery powered and/or live steam locomotives on his Northland Railroad.

The railway operations will be followed by a grilled dinner and some “run what brung” time. Saturday, July 21st: The day will begin with a narrow gauge railway operation, followed by lunch.

Narrow gauge operations will continue in the afternoon, followed by the traditional dinner and closing. Sunday, July 22nd: No specific events are planned for Sunday, as some guests will head home while others will remain to enjoy some sightseeing around Ottawa. The IPP &W Railway will be open if some want to continue running or just socialize. Monday, July 23rd: The last event of the 2012 Invasion will be on Monday, July 23 at the Finger Lakes Live Steamers layout in Finger Lakes Region in Marengo, NY (near Syracuse). Roger and Sue Caiazza are planning camp at the club site to welcome us as we arrive.

In addition to a Gauge One layout shown below the club also has 7 1/4 inch gauge (1.5 inch scale) and 4 3/4 inch gauge (1 inch scale) tracks. As a result, you will be able to ride train rides on the two larger scale layouts, as well as, enjoy an operating session on the Garden Railway. I’m very disappointed to announce that we have had to cancel our plans to attend.

If anyone needs a campsite at Rideau River Provincial Park please email me. If no one wants it I’ll be sending in my cancellation in a day or so.

Everyone have a great time and take lots of pictures

Marilyn and Jon,

Both Jan and I are sorry to here this. We look forward to seeing you next time or at the next place.

Very sorry to hear, Jon…we will miss your company.

Time is getting closer and final packing is beginning to be put in place. We’ll be getting underway on the 13th, for a day with the family along the way. The heat here has been pretty impressive and we are looking forward to the cooler temps and clear, clean air of the northern climates.
