Large Scale Central

2012 American Invasion

Out here in beautiful Deer Park, WA, we have finally arrived in summer. Mostly mid 80’s F, with an occasional spike to low 90’s. It cools off to low 40’s at night. 2600 ft of altitude (and attitude) helps.

MY ‘Malfunction Junction’ is our tongue-in-cheek nickname for the NDHQ [National Defence HQ] on the Rideau in Ottawa.

The most useful thing that I ever got out of the place was a great haircut, back in the days when it was actually worth spending $10 on such a thing. Now it would be nothing more than a statement of truth, a HAIR-cut.

Skating to work along the canal, with the streetlights throwing their glare/shadows over the ice, was one of life’s little high-points…

Hi guys, I’m sorry but I will miss most of the Invasion. Next week we are having our 40st wedding anniversary. We are taking the kids and grand kids to White Mountains. We will be riding Thomas and the Conway Scenic Railroad. Any railfan tips or such for this area?
I will leave some Dutch cookies behind.

See you at Saturday’s dinner.

Take the cog railroad up Mt Washington.
It’s on the west side.

We plan to go to NH to visit my youngest this summer. Trying to swing a trip to Conway and the Cog. Are both doable in 1 day? We will be staying about 2 hours away.

Thatd be a very long day. Probably doable if you took the first train up the mountain, then rush to conway for a ride. But itd be lots of driving

Thanks Bob. I figured as much. And I’d really like to do the Notch Train at Conway which is an all day deal. So will try and plan two days.

John,

If you like the steamer on Mount Washington you have to take the first train up at 8.30 AM. I will do that next week. Takes around 3 hours.

Henk

Henk and Jon and your fellow travelers: Take a jacket and a warm layer underneath!

The weather on the top of Mt Washington can be very different than the bottom.
Check out the warning to hikers in the July 12, 2012 Comments page: http://www.mountwashington.org/weather/comments/

The weather observatory pages are always fun to look at: http://www.mountwashington.org/weather/conditions.php
I often look(spending WAY too much time) at the various webcams.

Looking forward to your pics of the trip.

The Invasion schedule for Sunday, July 22nd has been updated. As some guests will head home, those that remain are welcome to visit Barry Birkett’s Orleans Division of the Orleans and Cumberland Garden Railways at 346 River Ridge Cresent, Orleans, Ontario K1E 3N1, Canada. Telephone 613-830-7476. The layout is a dog bone design with ten switching locations and one major yard. It can accommodate 5 trains operating. On this particular day there were only three trains running: one was operated by Bob Clarke on the left and another by Barry on the right.

If you have not had the pleasure of operating on this railway, you must see it this summer, as Barry and Bonnie are moving to Belleville, Ontario at the end of September. For more pictures of the layout, please click on the link. http://lyonvalleynorthern.blogspot.ca/2012/06/lela-and-i-had-visit-to-barrys-garden.html
