Large Scale Central

You won't believe what I found at the local junk shop!

Couldn’t find my soldering frypan, so I walked up to the local junk shop to see if he had an electric skillet for a couple dollars. He didn’t, but I was shocked to find…

Couldn’t leave it there, so now it’s mine. The power supply was missing, so it’s taken some research to find out the power requirements. Yesterday, the junk shop guy contacted me to tell me he found the power supply and two more rolls of filament.

And I found my soldering fry pan at Sully’s.

Nice find Tom… Those printers work quite well with a little TLC.

oh, oh, Tom. welcome to the world of frustration.

for starters i would recommend, to take a look (or thousands) at this: http://www.yeggi.com/

that is the best site, i found. it lists thousands of designs that are to be found on various sites. many of them free. (best bets seem to be the links leading to thingyverse)

use the search function with settings “latest” and “free” and type the searchwords “railway” or “railroad” or g scale.

and, don’t forget, to post pics of your results.

He didn’t find the power supply, but did have two more spools of filament. There is some more junk from the same source he hasn’t sorted through yet, so it might turn up. Otherwise, 14.6A 24V power supplies seem to be around $50 at ebay, but will have to wait till next payday.

Once I get it powered up, the next step is to find something to try printing. I’d start with something small so it doesn’t take many hours per failed attempt. Thanks for the link.

It seems this “Replicator 1” is old, but still well respected. I don’t have any real plans for it yet other than to make it work. I’ve heard of using DAZ Studio to print people. That’s the program I used to draw the pictures at http://www.improbable.me

Tom

Stay away from doing people, start off with a box. start simple, work your way up, learn settings, very critical, watch videos on you tube,

Make a few windows, some doors,

Good Luck

I have a 3D printer, I call it the machine of frustration

Another source for your power supply;

Cool, That will be fun to play with

It’s going to have to wait till another payday.

Tom, been there done that.

In the meantime, maybe you could read up on the thing, and watch some videos on it, and maybe even download some cool projects.

Just ordered a power supply. Never turned up at the junk shop.

I found a book online, but it seems to assume I already know what I’m doing. https://www.dropbox.com/s/0sipjpah45lcqax/3dPrintingBook.odt

I’m having a little trouble telling instructions or programs for the Replicator II or + from those for the old lasercut wood one that I have. Would they actually be the same?

They would be similar, since both are moving the heads in 2 dimensions. But I doubt they would be the same.

The original control software for that printer was ReplicatorG but hasen’t been updated in years. I highly recommend Cura https://ultimaker.com/en/products/cura-softwarehttps://ultimaker.com/en/products/cura-software

A pre-defined machine profile for your replicator is included.

Oh. Thanks! Perhaps I’ll go to the library and download it. I think they’re open late on Monday.

The real link is: https://ultimaker.com/en/products/cura-software

Don’t see mine listed in their printer list, but I asked a question on their forum. MakerBot seems to have forgotten about this one. Perhaps they have too.

I open Cura, Click machine, add new machine, Other, Makerbotreplicator, Finish. Maybe I should have mentioned I’m using v15.04

Hmm. Not in the other list any more

I have version 2.3.1

Bummer. But you can still get 15.04. I haven’t updated to the 2. version because everything works so well with the old one. If it ain’t broke…

Installing 15.04.6

And there it is, Makerbotreplicator in the list!

Oh, and it even includes a model. Now, if that power supply shows up… I have one on order, which means, of course, that the junk guy will find the original.

Having a back up may not be a bad thing.
