Large Scale Central

WV&K 4-8-0

Its all Tim Brien’s fault…Today my 4-6-0 No114 wandered into the Shops…

…and wandered too close to the Screwdriver of Destiny, and a new project was born…

Completeing one project at a time? I’m told thats a defeatist attitude. The plan is to add an additional blind driver, most likely where the current middle driver is moving the current middle driver to the front slot and building a frame extention to hold the front driver. Natcherly the pony truck, cylinders, and pilot will have to be moved foreward as well, which doesn’t look like it will be all that difficult since the cylinders and saddle are only held up by the valve gear assembly.

Looks like the connecting rod will have to be spliced to accommodate the new wheelbase, which ought to be a piece o’ cake. I have a set of cylinders I started for the ill fated Mallet project that might be usable here…

Bart,
‘Annie-bashing’ (kitbashing that is) is a contagious disease and will see many conversions follow. One can never have too many projects underway at the same time.

Another goody about to emerge from the Salmon Works. I can feel it! Great!! I’ve always loved the 4-8-0 wheel arrangement. SP had a number of them working the Pacific Northwest at one time. GN and N&W had them also.

I sure liked Tim’s conversions too.

Oh yes…the N&W Class M Mollies are my prime inspiration for this project…just a narrow gauge version…

OK…so I finally got down to the point where I was done taking stuff off the Annie Chasis…now its time to start adding things back. First thing is to move some drivers foreward and add a set. Since the Annie’s front drive axle has the sound cam on it it has a thicker axle, so a shim to accommodate the blind driver was in order, then an extention to the front to hold the lead driver…

With the drivers in place and the rods in place making sure the wheels turn freely

Rough idea of how far a frame extention is gonna have to be to mount the cylinders, valve gear, and front truck…

With a ruler in the picture, I figure the pilot beam is gonna be right at the 16.5" mark…making this about a 17" locomotive without the tender…

Not exactly the most svelte and seductive steamers there ever were,

But then again, a steamer gittin a move on, is, well,!!! http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=241818

Got some 1/4 brass channel and used it to splice the rods, with a cover plate in place …I got a 4 coupled mechanism to build on. Still a little rough on the front driver when power is applied, but I expected that , no binds in the rods…

Bart, looks good. As I’m still in the learning frame you won’t mind a few questions here and there will ya? If not, when you fix that “little rough” you won’t mind being a little more long winded than usual, will ya?

Well in reality…its because that sound cam is on the front axle. The Cover holding on the front axle is just a piece of scrap styrene screwed in place to temporarily retain the axle and as such the cam rubs on on the styrene also the frame extention has not been reinforced so it still has a little flex to it. I havn;t finalized anything in this area yet because of all the fabrication still yet required

Not really alot to report, I have decided to use the piston valves , and as such separated the crosshead guides from the old cylinder set for use…

Bart do you want to sell your old cylinders? I am in need of some

And now for something completely different… After a break where I finished Shay No8 I’m back to the 4-8-0 project which now actually has a name…well a Roadnumber really…WV&K No 120 …

First order of business, extended the frame so that I have something to build the rest on. This is a good indicator of just how long the wheelbase on this thing is gonna be. Good thing I have a new extention planned for the 4-8-0s to run on…these are definitely mainline locomotives…

YOU piston what?

Todays silly locomotive trick…I refit the drivers with counterweights…note the Main Driver does have a larger counterweight …

I decided not to use the other larger set of cylinders I had, opting to perform a Bobification (Because our own Bob McCown came up with the idea) of the original cylinder set…

Bobification continued into the night…by the end of the evening…

First shot " spray paint" in the background just hit me funny and probably not intentional. You have about 30+ more pages (with chatter) to catch up with Bruce.
Nice work

And for today…bolts in the cylinder heads…

And then I hit my goal of painting most everything and bolting everything back together and getting an operational chasis. Still work to do on the cylinders so they’re not painted as of yet, but she’s coming along nicely…

Bart,

If I had my Annie apart, again. I would replace the cast iron weight with a lead weight of the same weight. If any problem with Annie’s (and its former lives) is that it seems to be top heavy.

Too cool.

Did you make each of those bolts/nuts from scratch, or use castings?

Wait til ya see the boiler thats gonna go on this thing…gonna be top heavy…But the weights is gonna need to be moved foreward a bit anyways…

Ray, yes each bolt is two sperate bits of styrene…ummm 16 on the main cylinders and 8 on the piston valves thats…ummm…alotta bolts…

Making it hard on the rest of us with three builds going. All of which are looking good
