You should of used this for the back door.

I like how clean and neat your build is and the 3d printed parts are being put to good use. I’m always impressed whenever a builder details the underside.
Thanks, Todd. I haven’t shown it yet, but I started on the brake details, got the air cylinder and reservoir installed, the air lines run and then hit a brick wall on the operating side. Because I don’t have brake details on the trucks currently, I was (still am) having a hard time picturing where to run all the brake rods. I built the levers and fulcrums and could mount those, but the rod landing spots are giving me fits. So, I punted the brake detail and decided I would come back later and finish that part.

Thanks, Pete. I certainly wish you were competing this year. It’s sad when that thing called “work” hinders us from doing the things we enjoy. And yes, there is a lot of creativity this year. I really like the theme this year. Not that I disliked the themes in past years, as a matter of fact I generally prefer more limited themes because they get you pointed down a narrower path, but its just the freedom that this years theme gives us hit at the right time because I was itching to build some rolling stock. I have 2 more frames just like this one already built ready to be turned into something. I’m thinking a flatcar and maybe a rail and tie car. We’ll see.
I made it, I made it, I made it … I’m done … well, almost. First let’s catch up. I mentioned in a previous post that I had started working on the under-body brake details and stopped because I was unsure just how everything was supposed to go together. Thanks to Devon, I now know how to finish the brakes, but it will have to wait until after the challenge … and the pizza oven, Sean (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif). But here is how far I went before stopping.
Now for the finished, almost, product.
I still have some touch up painting to do and I need to add a few more details, but that’s it. The “grey” paint turned out to be almost blue (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-yell.gif)Not sure how I got blue from grey, black, and flesh color (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)Oh well, it is what it is. Dan I will say same thing I said to Devon , too red on the trucks, dont have the pictures I pulled up, but to my eye a lot of model train rust is way too red for MY eyes.

I like Dave’s idea on these tools you are creating. Real wood handle would be nice. Printing just the heads is a great idea.

Pete, after sleeping on it and looking at the paint job this morning, I think you are correct. But, I had planned to hit them with some weathering chalk today, so we will see if that tones them down a bit. Never used chalk before, so it might turn out to be a mess, time will tell (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
Get yourself a fan brush. Dip it into the chalks and load the brush. Then you tap it over the area you want to weather. Once the brush is pretty well unloaded then brush the chalk into the surface. A gently puff of air to remove the excess and it comes out great and no big mess. Also layer chalks with varying colors. It gives the surface a modeled look.
I used five different color chalks for my crane. Black, dark brown, tan, grey, and a rusty red color. And if you count the sifted dirt that would be 6 colors.
