Well I have used fan brushes before I watched Bob Ross, but I have been watching a lot of Bob Ross and that man does love his fan brushes.
Thanks, Devon. I din’t use a fan brush just a stiff artists brush. Getting the powder on was relatively straight forward, the problem came when I tried to spray it with a clear coat. I knew I had to spray it thin so I kept the trucks 12-15 inches away and when the clear coat hit the powder they just dissolved and disappeared. So I kept adding powder and using thinner coats and finally got it built up. I like this technique, but it is going to take a lot of practice. It really looks easy when you and others do it, but so did differential equations, and both are much harder when doing it on your own. I’ll upload some photos in a few minutes and get some feedback.

John, I have actually been to one of his classes, obviously not taught by him but his techniques. Not sure I would qualify as an artist even with help, what do ya think?
If you want to build them up I go the other way around. Spray the matte clear first then dust on the chalk. But I also don’t clear coat my chalks usually. They are the last thing to go on and are dusted in nd it usually holds fine if your surface has even a little tooth to it.
Clears seem to darken the weathering to me and make it look wet.
Devon, all these have a very thin (mist) clear coat. Took several iterations of powder, clear coat, rinse, repeat. Here are the trucks. They may need a little more, not sure, and I’m using the darkest powder I have.
They look much better, but not really what I was shooting for. Now the barrels turned out much better. I did one heavy and the other light.
One difference between the barrels and the trucks is the trucks have been painted and the barrels are raw PLA filament which has more tooth to hold the powder. Here is a jack i also weathered, it has been painted also.

I used both burnt and raw umber and burnt sienna. And then make my own powders from artists chalks.

But now in have powdered dirt in my inventory and once I used powdered sage spice. I have thought about using powdered cayenne pepper also but havent got around to it. Paprika would make a nice red rust powder. Think outside the box.

These are the powders that I have on hand.
The trucks were painted with burnt umber and just a tad of red mixed in. Was trying to get to an iron oxide color and went to far, I guess.

All joking aside, thanks for the input. This why I enjoy this challenge so much, when I need help all I have to do is ask. I’ll keep practicing. I have another set of trucks, different style, that have not been painted yet and I think I will try using the powders on the raw filament with a fan brush as suggested and see how that comes out. Won’t be for the Challenge, just for practice and feedback.
EDIT: BTW: do you have any suggestions for different powders or chalk? Brand, colors, etc? Thanks.

Needs more orange, less red.Even some yellow oranges, happy oranges…
I use Master’s Touch artist drawing pastels. Earth tone 12 color pack from Hobby Lobby. Use an exacto knife to scrap it into dust. Bought little plastic jars with snap on lids to hold the powder. Make sure you buy chalk and not oil pastels. Although I think oil pastels would have their uses so well. Just wont make powder.

These are what I store the powder in. Can get them at hobby lobby also. I believe you can find the same things at a Micheal’s just as easy
