Large Scale Central

Would it be too much to ask....

I like it the way it is. We don’t need an “Off Topic” forum section.

Bob M,

Keep it as it is. It is great, so don’t change it to suit a few verbose individuals.

I like it as the people who have a different opinion need to descend into personal comments.

And NO John, I read the forum on a 1920 x 1080 screen… it’s just that I read several forums and contribute a lot and I am not retired. I personally think it’s C.S. to refer to someone in an unambiguous manner, but feel it’s not a “personal comment” because you left his name out.

I’d bring the OT forum back if the OT topics would be moved there. I think Bob’s suggestion is great and I’ll sit back another couple of years until it gets out of control again.

Greg

Bob,

Keep the forum as is. The light hearted banter is normal and adds to comradery of any group. I left MLS because of the heavy handed “know it all” types in that forum. I have found this form to be very open, friendly, and most of all Knowledgeable.

All this makes for “interesting reading”, but considering that it’s only six weeks since Bob (our B D) posted this http://www.largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/22456/be-nice/view/post_id/261348 in a prominent location as a sticky, four pages and counting is a bit much. As always strictly my opinion and your mileage will vary.

Who doesn’t like one-liners?

Why can’t a steam locomotive sit down… … it has a tender behind!

And your point is?..

Gee just can’t win with you, up set when I do and upset when I don’t.

Previously (I think) you said it was a ‘Good point’, regarding mobile devices.

I believe I’ve heard complaints about mobile, so I put two and 2 together…

I think it’s funny to complain about siggies when there’s a pic and disclaimer in yours… every time.

Your subject matter does not contain the noun of a subject. It’s a question about an action. When I googled it your thread did not come up, but refreshingly I listened to an old Beatles tune.

Well I hope you got all the answers you wanted, please excuse those of us (including me) whose emotions you stirred. I like this place better as home, than an institution.

Be Well

John

I have an interesting observation on group dynamics, to show it doesnt just happen here.

I spent this past weekend at a small convention-like-thing, maybe 120 people. We are all interested in the same kind of activity. In any group conversation, while sitting around, someone would inevitably make some kind of off-color, political, or religious comment. 99 % of the time, they were met with dead silence, or people left the room. In one case, two guys got into a minor personal argument that was making people uncomfortable. Someone went and got one of the organizers, who came by and kicked both of them out for the rest of the weekend. After dinner that night, it was announced they would not be returning next year, and they reminded us to not engage in provoking someone for a reaction. We were there to have fun, and these two known troublemakers had reached the limit of the organizer’s patience.

Thats almost verbatim what happens here from time to time. People feel the NEED to provoke or comment at someone, JUST to get a reaction. The only difference between this weekends event, and what happens here, is that two people (and wives) kicked out lost over $2000 they had spent for the weekend.

Everyone needs to remember we’re here to have fun. If you’re annoyed at someone, shut the hell up, or do it in a private message. I have NO patience any more, and someone’s going to get it in the neck (again) if it starts up.

The point is: Bob’s “Be Nice” post clearly states “You’ve been invited into my living room to talk trains.” Unless I have a very special computer I’m reasonably sure that message reads the same on any browser. The interesting part is the topic was ignored/derailed starting on the very first page. Apparently because it doesn’t agree with some world views.

RESET

This is all I said, and I think the thought is clear. (It’s below to avoid conjecture)

I did use three real examples, only because when I don’t the conversation drops down to nit-picking or that I’m making stuff up. (John, Tom, and Mike have demonstrated thick skins already)

Somehow the point is now missed, and/but expanded beyond it. That’s OK, of course, but don’t blame ME for the “expanded” interpretation of the simple things I brought up.

Regards, Greg

Hah, the subject is really an example of something I’d like to bring up.

Could we please have topic titles that relate to the subject…

Things like: “guess what…”, “can someone help”, “found on ebay…”

Please post like “Aristo craft bell needed…”, and especially on things that have nothing to do with trains (thank you to Tom Ruby and Mike Morgan, respectively, really), “I’m a grandpa” and “It’s my birthday”…

I really don’t think it’s too much to ask…

Also in the “request” category, please never make a post shorter than your signature.

This is (I think) a bit clever… clearly one-liners are useless other than seeing your name in print, and long signatures with your breakfast plans a year in advance, and 3 lines to put up one link, quoting someone famous about simplicity and your signature is almost 2 inches high on the screen…

I hope no one really takes this personally, but I have used real examples. With so little real “train” content these days, there seems to be an awful lot of non-train stuff I’d like to skip and quickly.

OK, let all the flames begin!

Greg

Are you sure it’s my skin?

Needed: Concise and descriptive Subjects

Now that’s a subject!

3 valid points in body doesn’t really help a search, does it?

Bob can we have little arrows that we can shoot at posts we don’t like?

Noise abatement nixed guns…

Wrong John, different John… “Arizona John” you were not an example in my first post, you don’t have a huge signature with a quote about how good simplicity is.

Different John was referenced in original post.

I was going to put something in specifically for you so you did not misinterpret… figured you would realize I was not talking about you… guess not…

Greg

Bob, i also think, that it is fine as it is.

and the number of people here, who like to stir things and people up is not big.
since i learned to evade reading the posts of two persons, from my point of view there is nothing, that needs changing about this forum.

I agree with Ken, Bruce and especially dad.

Since Bob is speaking “flying figs” it was only a couple of years ago that quite a few of these folks didn’t give a flying fig about BOB’s Site when MLS, LYSOL and the other forums were in there glory.

B.D, I really agree with all of this. When you had the off topic forum, it was a constant source of irritation to you. Baby sitting on a group of supposed adults doesn’t seem to me to be a position I would relish either.

I feel the improvements you’ve made to this site, since you eliminated the off topic forum have all been positive. The members who spend their online time here do not want another MLS or LSOL, if they did they wouldn’t be here. MLS killed itself by allowing certain things to fly for certain people. We don’t want that here! But, some members are trying to destroy the good you have in the site and duplicate the problems that killed the other sites. If you as a member want the site to be another MLS, THEN GO BACK TO MLS, and don’t let the screen door hit you in the A** as you go.

This site does fine without the off topic forum. Maybe a better idea would be to institute the proposed rules for an off topic forum into the forums you already have. You don’t need to provide space for unrelated topics.

Order of posts did not reveal that… to me

Unfortunately only a few days am I Psychic, the rest I’m just Psychotic.

Hear, hear!

Even as an occasional offender (mea culpa) I really like this suggestion.
