Large Scale Central

Winter Photography

It is getting to be that time of year.

Except for the road names and color scheme that bottom picture could have been on my RR  No snow here yet, buy the layout is covered with leaves. If we ever have a dry weekend I’ll get those picked up. These from several winters ago…

how did you get your cat to go outside in the snow?

He follers me everywhere. He is curious as to what sort of trouble I’m going to get into next. It is his amusement for the day. Sort of like why I stayed in the Navy for 20 years. “I wonder what sort of stupid things these guys are going to do next?”

Great shots guys!!! Jon, That high hood N&W power is sweet!!! My winter shots from last year 2007

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
Shoppers everywhere!
The shelves are looking bare.
The tempers are starting to flare.
Beware of the traffic near the mall!

This is from last year also.

Just waiting for the white stuff!!

None here yet, okay with me!

I cant get enough of the snow pictures. All great shots Something about the trains running in the snow. I have to admit running trains in the snow is far better then in the hot humid summer.

I’ts here!!!

We got a pretty good dusting of snow here yesterday. Unfortunately it was too cold and windy to do anything in it. However there was a time when I was stupid enough to go out in it and take pictures…

Snow??? Whats that? I built a plow…back in…ummm 1998 I think…AND ITS NOT SNOWED SINCE!!!

We got just a little over a dusting Sunday AM. It would have been perfect for pictures, but I noticed Saturday when I finally got all the leaves off the layout that I had a track joint that had completely pulled apart from contraction, so the line is out of service for all points east of Wall. It was too darn cold out there to try and fix it, and as soon as the sun came out I had melt drips all over the track.

If it warms up I’ll have to fix the track. I do like running the live steamer when it’s cold.

This was taken the very day Terry (TAC’s) Saab was sitting in my mailbox when I came home for lunch. I put it outside, took pictures at various angles, came inside and ate lunch. We had a bit of snow the night before so that is the dusting you see. What’s freaky is It started snowing again as I sat and ate lunch. I finished eating and peeked out at the model only to find what you see in the below picture. It’s almost like the snow was mailed with the car!

Thanks again Terry!..Now give me your address so I can pay you for the car! Dave

Bart, some call it "Winter", others call it "Global Warming".

Still no snow here except for that one quickie that melted by noon. My son Matthew is working on the problem, he’s building a home-brew snow making machine by crossing an air compressor, power washer and an oil burner nozzle :o So far trials haven’t produced much and today the temp is near 60. He needs 20-28 for it to work well.

I did get out yesterday and repair the broken track joint, so the entire line is now back in service. Turns out a pair of brass track profile Hillmans were used on SS track which deformed them to where they would no longer hold. I’m actually not sure why I used rail clamps in this spot on a bridge instead of the Aristo screw joiners since they have performed well for me by using enlarged head screws.

That’s quite interesting Jon…How does he know what type of oil burner nozzle to use maybe it doesn’t matter? Or perhaps the finer the mist and the different angles might make the difference between snow or freezing rain!!! I wanna see pictures of that if it works! Now go buy the kid a mig welder and have him make some bridges for ya’ as well!

David,

You said - “Now go buy the kid a mig welder and have him make some bridges for ya’ as well!”

Matt’s Christmas present should have been a no brainer. Next year he’s off to college and Jon will still be talking about building bridges, but now Matt will be gone. Matt could have paid for his own college with his welding art work for large scale trains. And if it failed, Jon would have had a tax write off for a failed business, but he’d still have a mig welder.

Funny - We actually had that welder conversation a little over a year ago. Problem was we couldn’t find anyone to teach him. Around here you need to go to Technical High School in order to have any kind of metal or auto shop classes available. And, if you go to Tech HS you can just about forget getting into college. When I went to school, you could take honors English, Marketing and Auto Shop all in the same year at the same school. Made for some nice well rounded graduates (and those that know me can assure you that I am, well, round(ed) ) The snow makers are pretty well documented on the internet…
