I found a bunch of these in a junk box.
I’m curious where they came from.
I have a bunch as well. With out going out to my shop for a look I’m thinking they are Aristo
I think they are LGB. LGB had a split axles design that was hard to adjust the back to back spacing.
The plastic Aristo did have the flutes on the inside as I now recall.
The ones I found are a lightweight metal with flutes.
These are probably 35 years old.
Aristo plastic:
John, the ones in your first photo are plastic or metal?
I’ve never owed an Aristo car and I’m looking at a LGB Plastic wheel set still on a piece of rolling stock and it looks exactly like the photo.
In the first photo are a lightweight cast metal.
Craig, is the one you are looking at metal?
Plastic. The only metal is the axle.
I didn’t realize your original post was a metal wheel.
Craig, that is what peaked my interest. I’m sure these came on cars I bought 30-40 years ago. I also painted them.
But I can’t remember the brand of car.
However they look exactly like the Aristo fluted plastic wheel. They are a cast wheel on a metal axle with a plastic axle housing. Probably two piece wheel. I’ll pull one apart.
I can’t find anything with a search on line.
John,
Are you SURE the wheels are cast metal? I myself like you have found nothing online or in my shop (yes, I looked today) that would resemble that Griffin style wheel in metal.
Yes, Kadee makes one but you are about 25yrs to early for that not to mention you are old and can get confused at times. So I/we understand if they are plastic wheels that are more than likely Aristo or LGB as they both look pretty much the same (spline wise) as I had both in my shop.
Ozark Miniature ever make wheels?
Or Gary Raymond wheels?
If it’s cast metal I’d guess OM. BUT if turned, I’d guess GR…
Weight would be easy to tell if plastic or cast metal. Plastic ones are super light.
Roo, they have to be cast, because no one would machine those flutes out of a solid blank.
How about Precision Scale?
The precision scale wheels I’m familiar with also have some writing embossed on the outer side. I can’t remember what it reads. (Yes, Rooster, old age and CRS!! (Can’t Remember Shi%#$)
Another mystery of the Universe solved. Huzzah!
Indeed! And while we’re on a roll, How was the Great Pyramid of Giza built?
