What would you do with these?

Not sure if I was dumb or smart. I just picked up 5 New Blight cheeser box cars for the princely sum of $18… Yes, I realize they are ‘toy-like’, maybe even ‘crappy’, BUT I figured they’d work for sitting on sidings and maybe running at our antique machinery club because I won’t cry too much if they get trashed or stolen.

That said, I’m interested in your opinions on what the minimum upgrades needed to make them tolerable as models. I’m guessing I’ll need to change out the couplers somehow, and the wheelsets, 1f not the entire trucks, add a bit of weight, strip them and repaint… but what else???

jerry barnes did a really great re-visioning of one of those in GR a year or so back. He raised it and put two single axles under it.

Mik, they remember me of my lemons. how long are they? if you klick on the link below, it should take you to my log of the first conversion of one of those. http://kormsen.ko.funpic.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=438

Korm, I quit using your site because of the hosting company’s stupid banner thing now won’t let you simply close it. To see the board you HAVE to click the darn thing and get redirected. You ought to sue them for denial of service.

i can’t sue them, the space is free but with ads. but i don’t have a problem with clicking the ads away.
they had some probs a while ago. try it again.

btw - you know, that more than the half of the projects there are yours?

Well then, you'd better get busy partner... I DID take almost 3 months off ---- just to give you all a chance to catch up. hehehehe

This year’s planned projects (besides putting in a garden and railroad) include a coal mine complex, a simpler sawmill suitable for outdoors, 2-3 more buildings for the layout at Portersville, a big 40-80 Minneapolis gas tractor, these 5 box cars, 8 Delton hoppers from parts, and whatever else happens to catch my fancy…

Very creative use of the toy train wagens.

So Mik
what are you going to do next weekend?

If all goes as planned, next weekend I’ll be building a shed and digging a hole for a pond… If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by.

You can make nice 2 axle boxcars with those. Like someone mentioned GR had a nice kitbash of one. Just need to add height by using a block of wood and then coffee stir sticks glued to the outside and details. They look great when done up like that. I tried that with a newbrite but the new ones seem to be all one piece. The ladders etc dont come off they are part of the mold. It made it very difficult to kitbash the new ones. Looks like you got the older version where the ladders etc. come off. Cant wait to see what you come up with. Besides shouldnt you be working on the RR first. LOL

What would I do with them? You don’t want to know.

Mik,
i’m a bit short of time…
i haven’t even startet the car for the challenge.
just finished the 2009 bookkeeping and all the "darling do"s don’t help either.
(it’s much easyer to steal some minutes from working to get in a forum, than to actually find time to do something real)
but i will catch up with you. - over the years, when you run out of ideas…

David,
thanks. i bought them just for bashing.
my free money is too short to build a layout AND buy expensive stuff.
so i’m stuck with “sticks and twigs modelling” as somebody called it in another forum.

Back to the subject at hand. My friend from Cali sent me the following pics of an 1860’s ‘house car’ model. Clear off a few extraneous details, add a brake staff and a pair of truss rods and it might actually look pretty close?

A (IMHO) cool option would be a decal swap. Anybody interested in trading a set of your road’s decals for a set of AV ones?

Mik, I've got some of the PVRR heralds printed. I'd be happy to swap with you. Ralph

shoot me your address Ralph. Did you want the early ‘Allegheny Valley’ or late ‘AVRR’ version?

Mik, does your friend have more photos of USMRR?

The early “Allegheny Valley” looks good to me Mik.
I’ll shoot you my address.
Ralph

Gladly, which style would you prefer, sir?

I guess the older as well. It will be going on a box car.
