I say Detroit was building what we wanted to buy. Prove me wrong. What was the last NEW(not used) vehicle you bought?
The last new vehicle I bought was a 2006 Buick Lucerne.

Must have been a 1980’ish Toyota High Ace light van.
I keep my two old 1975 & 1976 LWB 351 cu in, LPG powered Ford LTD’s on the road with proper maintenance, so I don’t need a new car. Even if I could afford one.
They are big, comfortable, reliable and reasonably economical considering their age and size.
The energy used to build them was consumed a long time ago, so I claim they are less polluting than buying a new car five or so years.
Never owned a car that was less than 10 years old. – Unless you count 1:24
2003 GMC Envoy. Paid it off a couple of years ago and no plans to buy new again for at least 3 years. My wifes car is a 1995 Buick that she inherited. Her previous car, a 1995 Neon is being driven by my son.
I almost got the bug in the spring and considered buying a new tow vehicle. Looked at prices and where I’m at financially and decided maintaining the '03 was a better choice. Now, if GMC does what Jeep has done (50% off sticker) and throws in 0% financing, I could be convinced to buy a crew-cab pick-em-up.
I’ve never bought a new vehicle.
2005 Chevy crewcab C2500 4x4. Needed for my wifes hobby-towing a horse trailer.
Before that:
1999 Mercedes Benz ML. Still have that in the garage.
Considering a 2009 Chevy Camaro, (if I win) or a 2009 Mini Cooper, (If my wife wins.)
I have not purchased a used vehicle since 1974.
Never owned a new one, either. Buy 'em with 50 - 70K on ‘em for half the price (or less) than new, with 5 years’ worth of broad-based maintenance data to go on for expected reliability. Run 'em either 'til they drop, or they’re about to and I can still get something in trade for 'em. Never let one go with fewer than 130K; most pushed 180 - 200K. Yeah, there’s some maintenance issues with older cars, but the $10K (minimum) price savings up front makes it a bit easier to smile (or at least not cry) when writing the check for the new transmission.
Having said that, Allison’s future VW Bug will be bought new. She has a very specific list of what she wants that would be nearly impossible to match on the used market. I’ll probably spring for a new roadster of some kind for my mid-life crisis, also.

The closest was a 1967 Cougar in December 1970 or January 1971.
I don’t like dealerships, be it import or domestic.
Hey! I had a 67 Cougar XR7. Got it used after returning from VN in 68. Never have had a nicer car since. Cried the day I traded it in for a 72 Cougar XR7…piece of junk! That 68 today would be worth a lot of bucks. Now have a 03 Trailblazer. Like it very much. Love to burn up dat Arab oil…

No wonder the economy is in the crapper. Nobody here is buying new cars.
And to think I have been blaming Bush, and all this time it was you guys.

1998 Dodge Ram Pick Up, 3/4 ton 4 X 4. I expect this truck to last as long as I do.
Last (almost) new car is a 1994 Honda Prelude. Now my wife’s ride. It was a very low mileage demonstrator, so technically not NEW.
Before that, my 1979 GMC 3/4 ton 4WD pickup. Bought new and now at nearly 30 years old, has ~110,000 original miles on it. Pure utility vehicle with none or the creature comforts of modern trucks. It just brought ~3000# of concrete blocks home, waiting to be unloaded.
Other fleet members: 1995 Ford Explorer (bought slightly used) and a 1931 Ford AA 1 1/2 ton truck (bought really used).
Average fleet age: ~34 years.
The car companies would certainly go out of business waiting for me to buy another new car.
Happy RRing,

2004 GMC van and 2000 Jeep Wrangler TJ, both bought new in the appropriate years. Last used car purchased for myself was a 1976 Jeep Wrangler CJ in 1996. My son still has it.
Well,
So far we are proving that you all like the last Detroit Iron you bought, as most are still driving them.
Besides my wife’s car, I have an 81 Chevy short bed pick up, which I love.
I also have a 95 Ford Aspire(made by Kia) bought used, which I hate. Today I was reminded why. I spent $27 at Advance Auto for a Purolator fuel filter. It took me awhile to get over that. Then I discovered the friggin filter was made in China.

I have an insane love for new cars, I have purchased 13 new since 1990. My most recent are a 2008 Pontiac Solstice bought this last July and a 2009 Dodge Journey purchased a couple of months ago. The Dodge is my first non GM vehicle. It’s a sickness. The longest I have kept a car is my 2004 Malibu Maxx at 48,000 miles. I just bought tires for it so I am guessing it will be around a little longer.
1978 Suzuki 4x4. 800cc’s of raw power, but absolutely the sweetest vehicle to work on that I’ve ever owned.
I currently drive a 1990 Jeep Cherokee with 499,982kms on the clock. I expect it to hit half a million on Thursday.
2006 Toyota Scion xB, current driver
2004 Nissan Frontier, sold to go to higher milage xB
1993 Suzuki Samurai, over 120K miles
1989 Honda Civic, over 110K miles
Once you get used to quality Japanese cars, its hard to go to GM.
Victor Smith said:I never did. One of the few mistakes Henry made was when he fired Louis Chevrolet he didn't shoot him.
, its hard to go to GM.
Can you say “Vega”?
How about “Corvair”?
I saw a restored Corvair on the road the other day. Wonder where they got a floor pan for it. Reynolds Wrap ?
I just saw one yesterday, nicely hot rodded…not to sure I’d trust in on anything twistyer that a 1/4 mile straight!
