Hi guys:
large scale central always pops up fast, no delays.
The other forum often is slow or almost non-functioning. Now it is slow. Any ideas why their server is often slow?

Me being very bad:
They deserve it that way!
Yes, me very bad!
Opens OK for me.
No problem for me.
It opens ok for me but it does take a few extra seconds when compared to here.
If you’re not a 1st class member, it takes quite a long time for the remote advertising to load.

The slowness there is why I started posting here again. A lot of the same folks are over here, and the site runs faster. I still have another year paid for over there, so I will use that time to evaluate whether to continue paying for the “service.” Can’t afford to pay at both sites, but I may just pack up my photo files and start a membership here if the cyber service cannot improve. I also appreciate the longer edit availability on this site.
Not really knocking anyone, just trying to judge the real value of the service.
Yours,
David Meashey
I have enjoyed the real service on here for almost ten years. Joined right after I got my FirstClass refund for non-performance of service on the other site.
Combine all three forums (the other GR) and save bandwidth… too much cross posting.
I ask again… why do we care?
We aim to please!
“I ask again… why do we care?”
Well I care because I may have to move all my eggs (photos) to a different basket. Seriously, that is my big concern.

If you don’t have your own website to store your pictures there are a number of photo specific sites that offer that service (for free?).The biggest problem when moving from one site to another, be it a forum or a storage site, is the fact that all your previous links in the various fora/groups expire and that won’t be looking all that hot in the umpteen posts that will be affected (the cross-posting gremlins send their regards )
OTOH once you got things moved to a site that is up and stays up you will be smiling. Since I also run a RR forum I’m familiar with the problem and after a few snags in the beginning things have been pretty good. (Touching my wooden head! :D)
Dave,
I have been reading the other forum, as well as this and others, for about four years now. I finally joined the other forum about 3 1/2 years ago (not a paying member). In that time the owner has moved the forum at least once that I am aware of, and possibly twice. From my perspective as a user, quality of service has slowly continued to erode over time. The advertising continues to take longer and longer to load. My personal bit is I don’t generally wait more than 10 seconds for a page to load. I cut these fora some slack being as many of the threads I like to read the most also contain the most photos, and they take time to load. However, waiting sometimes up to a minute while my browser is ‘Connecting…’ is a bit much, then the waiting for the ads to load, sometimes makes me just log out and forget reading for that day. I would like nothing more than for that site to perform as well as this one.
The statement has been made (not directly to me but to others), ‘Upgrade to 1st Class to fix the problems’. I personally don’t see how paying for membership will ‘fix’ server side issues, unless they are issues instituted by the forum operator (no accusation being made). And if in fact paying does fix the problems, that almost seems like blackmail to get performance.
I am not knocking the other site, just voicing my observations and perspectives. All of the Large Scale forums I haunt have a bunch of great people and an abundance of information that cannot be equaled anywhere else.
Holy crap!!
Are you serious there are other train forums out there??
Hundreds of 'em.
I use Firefox for my browser with Adblock plus add on. It loads all the web sites I go to faster than IE and NO adds to bother with.
The other Large Scale site (MLS I am NOT a dues paying member there) Loads just as fast as this one for me.
Adblock Plus is really good. I use it too. Bob has requested that you disable it for this site and in return he has kept the advertising to a bare minimum and it all loads fast directly from Bob’s server. And unlike other sites, here everyone gets to see the advertising whether you buy storage space from him or not.
BTW - Here all memberships are free and include picture storage. If you need more that the included 5MB of storage Bob will be happy sell you a Freight Shed. All this with only a single small ad at the top of each page and sponsors on the forum list.

The key to making forum changes for me is to make sure I keep ALL the old messages. Never start ANY site over from scratch, it just annoys people. Ive been making changes here for years, but theyre all small steps. Never a huge jpump, even though Id like to change things much faster than I have.
