Large Scale Central

Well I didn't see this coming

SO…as some of you know I ripped up my RR last fall and sold everything off…this after 20+ years. I moved onto a different hobby or so I thought. But every time I looked out into the backyard I had pangs of regret…not at first but over time. So I sat down and tried to figure it out…what was the problemo? I think, in a word I can say AccuCrack. I got sucked into live steam and loved/hated it. I tried Roundhouse…very reliable good runners for 20 minutes, but always having to turn down the gas pressure. AccuCrack…gorgeous models at a great price but forever having serious problems that meant sending it back, because, God knows why, they don’t provide any tech literature to repair the thing yourself. I had always resisted Aster because of the price but then it dawned on me… the amount of money I spent and then lost selling Accucraft stuff. SOoooo. I bought an Aster Berkshire kit and a thing of beauty it is, with wonderful dwgs and parts and support… S0 here I am starting a factory building modeled after a huge place down the street from me that use to be the United Shoe Machine Corp (Google it for pictures) Here’s a pic of the wall with just windows, 5’ x 2’. It’s being made to look like reinforced concrete like the original.

I also found some cool moldings at Home Depot for the cornice at the top.

Larry,
It’s in your blood. You can’t get away from it!
There may be a month or so I don’t run, but the layout is still in the back yard. You never know when the disease resurfaces.
Nice building, BTW.
As for sparkies, I’ll let other fanatics run 'em while I watch.
Speaking of buildings, I’m ready to start back on my mine complex, and I need more corrugated aluminum!

Whatever you’ve got it appears to be beyond cure.
Molding turned out to be a pretty neat find.
What or who are windows from?

Neat building, welcome back! My mom worked for USM for many years.

welcome back… Nice building…

Thanks guys. “In the blood”…that explains it  Did you ever live near here Bob? Forrest…the windows are made from ceiling panels from HD 2’ x4’ costs $12 The boss is taking a nap so I have to wait for tomorrow before I spool up the table saw again. SO meanwhile I started cutting door panels for the next wall. They’re made from 1/4" scribed styrene that I’ll glue on to 1/4" thick Sintra.

nice build Larry

Looks nice. What’s the rest of the building made from?

Welcome back to the hobby. Nice building so far. You going to build another outdoor layout?

Yep sure does and the molding is pine I believe. Not sure where ya' live Larry or if it's even going outside? Neat building and nice use of "cheap" or lets say cost efficient materials either way. Welcome Back and it is in the blood I believe! ;)

Here’s an ex Selwyn Brown shoe factory we have here. Apartments now. Used to live there; but I could feel the building vibrating too much to ever completely relax. Those window sections are each 3ft wide by 7ft tall. Modeling this is a bigger project than I wish to take on in either HO, On30, or G. Would be cool though. Is along the old MKT about 200-300 yards from Missouri River. Anyone want to take it on? Picture is a couple winters ago with cheap camera.

Buildings like that are just what the doctor ordered for a backdrop. Industry in 2" of space!

Yea,
That’s great. I plan on making more use of facades.
Ralph

Yes indeed. Poplar. It will be outdoors in the northeast…just like the house I live i…also made of wood… With proper primer and paint it will be fine. The key will be to raise the foundation a bit on plastic…you’ll see.

And yes…a new RR in the spring. I have 800 ft of SG code 250 track under the work bench.

Looks like you’re hopelessly hooked. Might make a good subject for intervention TV.

Nice looking structure so far.

Have any construction pics or dimensions? Is it all dado work, or what? Its pretty neat.

Larry,
It is in the BLOOD! Genetic malady. You got it from someone in your family just as I did. My Grand Dad loved steam and now my 3 yr old grandson thinks it is the greatest thing since chocolate milk. My kids could care less. The Aster Mike is a thing of beauty. Check with the guys at Akien Back Live Steamers at the ECLST show in March and you will get many tips on how to get long runs. RC it and it will be a blast. I have seen Harry Quirk do switching moves with it.
Noel

Glad to have you back in model railroading
